Racist Question

After the news today of a black person being asked where she comes from and the problems it has caused. It made me think. Last Saturday I was in a waiting room at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford waiting for my husband to have his scan. A couple from Milton Keynes were waiting for the lady to have her scan, when she was called her husband and I started chatting. He asked where did I originally come from. No shock horror that I was not
from Oxfordshire, just a genuine question. I told him Newcastle area, but a ship building town called Hebburn. We had a long chat and he told me he had happy memories of Newcastle and a beer called Brown Ale, that was lovely to drink, but it gave him the worst hung over ever. I wonder when if ever people of colour will stop seeing a racist in any remark made. If I saw her I would think she was possibly from Africa. No offence meant, but I would now be very wary.

I think the point was that when she was asked she told her she was British born she said no where are you really from. British people come in many shapes sizes and colours and if we go back far enough we will probably find that our fore fathers (and mothers) came from elsewhere.

I often get asked if I come from South Africa, I just laugh, it is funny to watch the facial expressions when I tell people I come from Newcastle, then elaborate further by telling them where exactly I come from, I most certainly don’t take any offence.

I do find that sometimes people find offence where none is intended.

I think this is where we all are at the moment Liz. People finding offence when none is intended and our coloured/ black coursing are on a roll at the moment.

There was a copy of the transcript of the conversation, which I can only assume was accurate. Was in the Daily Mail.

I think that the founder of that charity or whatever was deliberately evasive to the RF Aide.

The RF aide could have realised that evasion and pushed more.

Of course without actually hearing it you cannot judge the tones of voice used.

A lot of us older people dislike evasiveness.

So I think both parties were at fault to some extent. If I was asked I would say Tyneside both further back a mix of U.K. countries.but a bit more explanatory.

It was maybe a younger person taking advantage of and older person deliberately. That’s what I feel, been set up !

I wonder who taped the conversation.

A total storm in a teacup over-egged by the media.
I know that taking a person on how they look can be presumptuous but look at the photo.......strike a light....does she look like a cockney sparra.....?
No wonder the old lady asked if she actually came from Africa. She certainly chose to dress as if she did and that is her right BUT if I was dressed in a kilt and sporran despite being from Jarrow might someone ask me " are you from Scotland?"

Absolutely correct Mac, a storm in a tea cup.but since BLM it seems certain people are on a roll, just keeping it going. I was annoyed to hear, USA John Kerry and Caroline Kennedy(forgot her married name) have made excuses and will now not meet The Prince and Princess of Wales. I know one vindictive couple in the USA who will be pleased.

I have heard the whole conversation and consider there was no offence intended but badly worded questions, if she had asked “So, where are your family originally from”? I don’t think it would have been a problem, the old saying is very true ‘Engage your brain before opening your mouth’!

The lady in waiting pushed the question beyond the point but the other person has milked it for all its worth. The press haven't helped, it must have been a slow news week because she has never stopped being interviewed by the press, she was on woman's hour too. I think the only things she hasn't appeared in are the Angling Times abd Pigeon Fanciers Weekly.
