Another try to get names

My late cousin Robert Nicholson was born about 1940 ish in old Cuthbert St & he spent all his working life at sea.
He told me this interesting tale about 20 years ago .
One year, as Captain of a Sea Going Tug he was towing a large Barge from Africa across the Atlantic to Florida in the USA and hit real bad hurricane type weather.
On the ships radio he received a message from a lady on a private yacht called the ‘London Lady’ ahead of them and having problems finding their Locations so she asked Robert if he could give them their position. Robert worked it out and when he got back to the Yacht her husband replied with a Geordie accent. Robert recognised Geordie so asked him where abouts was he from & the man said ‘A little town called Hebburn’. Robert said he was born in Cuthbert St and still lives in the Town. He asked the man where abouts in Hebburn did he live and I’m pretty sure the man said he was brought up in Tennant St in the Newtown and he had either 5 or was it 6 sisters. Robert had forgot the mans surname when he told me the story but he always wondered if the Yacht got to the USA safely.
I’ve tried a few times to find out what the man’s surname was but no luck .
A good clue is he had 5 sisters, ran his own Company in the USA and had went back and forth across the Atlantic on his yacht a few times on Business. I’ve had this story on previous Hebburn message boards over the years but so far no luck .

WOW Norman, that's a helluva request... but I love a mystery.

But there's nothing to go on, however, and there's always a "however"...

Time-wise, can you narrow it down? I'm assuming (hate to do that) if your cousin was born 1940-ish, then it would be at LEAST 1970 before he made Captain? So we are talking 1970-2000? Can you be anymore accurate?

Do you know the name of the sea-going tug that he Captained?

Or ANYTHING else, no matter how insignificant it may seem....

I would be guessing, but 1970s to 2000 sounds reasonable.

Norman, I remember a lot of families in Tennant Street. I’m thinking about the houses past the Co oP going towards Reyrolles, but can’t think of a family of 4/5 girls and one son. The Leaske family had a few girls and one boy, but the lived in one of the streets off Tennant Street. I went to a school with Pat McKenna quite a few sisters and one brother, but they lived in the older council houses off Campbell Road.

Off Tennant Street, you may still say "I'm from Tennant Street"?

The LEASK (no letter E) family:
Edith born 1931
Marjorie born 1933
Norma born 1936
Thelma born 1939
Leslie born 1942
MALCOLM born 1946.

So, 5 girls & a boy. PURELY circumstantial, I know.

And NONE appear in the 1939 Register, which would have given an address. I can only assume that they are all still living, hence not on the 1939 Register. A black line is drawn through a name whilst they are still living, with "This record is officially closed" across the name.

Tentative, I know. Their mothers maiden name was Stothard.

Can't find anymore about Malcolm Leask (the possible yacht captain)

But you never know.....

The man on the 'London Lady' might have said ' We lived in the Tennant St area of the Newtown'.
What we need to know is did Malcolm Leask emigrate to the USA?

In the 1980s when l followed Scarborough FCC we had a few lads from the north east and one of them was Malcolm Leask show by the way was a good footballer who came from Hebburn,he lived in Leslie Ave top end of Jutland Ave where I used to live l remember he he had sisters I would think he will be n his 70s now.
I would class his address as be ing in the Newton.o
Just a little reminder Norman about your nephew Robert Nicholson he was in my class from the Quay Board then Clegwell big lad big character he joined the police force in the school opera as you would guess a policeman in the Pirates of Pensanzeq chorus RIP

Tom, the family must have moved, but when we were at school, I think they lived in Thistle or Rose Street, must have been early 1950’s.

Malcolm worked in Reyrolles all his working life,still lives in Hebburn.
Tom you’re right,Malcolm played for Scarborough, his brother in law Gerry Coyne also played for them. I

I think you are right that Norma Leask lived in Thistle street same street whereNorma Laverick lived in the 1950s.

Thanks Harry that rules out Malcolm Leask. The Newtown Houses were getting demolished in the 1950s and us kids got a lot of good Bonfire from there eg wooden doors

Norma Laverickand I were good friends from our schooldays She was alovely girl I know she was friends with your dear sister Margaret in later years sadly Norma died aged only 41yrs old.at that time she did move to the Lake district with her partner,they had an hotel business. Margaret often visited her.happy and sad memories.for me.Tom.

Thanks Lilian. I know the Streets, Buchanan Street, St Rollox Street, then Shamrock Street. I know the rest of the names, but never quite know which order they go. Although I do remember Charles Street being the last, before Station Road.

Norma and Lilian,l have spoken to my sister Maureen and she agreed with you both that Leask family lived in either Thistle or Charles st she said there was 3 lads and daughters in the family,Malcolm Leask lives on Victoria rd.

I remember, Marjorie Norma and Thelma. Three very smart attractive girls. Marjorie and Thelma worked in Reyrolles. Norma married a Hebburn butcher called Mallam.

Hi, Malcolm Leask is my dad, Leslie was male and the eldest sister (Alma) is not mentioned. Only my dad and Thelma are still alive, my dad has lived in Hebburn his whole life, Anna

I was sad to read that Anna. I remember Marjorie from Reyrolles and Norma. I think Norma’s was married to a Hebburn Butcher called Mallam.

I’ve just spoken to my dad (Malcolm Leask). He doesn’t know any Leask’s that were sailors. He lived in Thistle street before moving to Quarry road then when he married my mam he lived at st johns avenue and then moved to Derby crescent where he still lives. His sister Norma married the butcher Norman Mallam. His eldest sister moved to Newcastle, in age order there was, Alma, Edith, Marge, Norma and Thelma, Leslie and Malcolm, last two were boys and 24 years between oldest and youngest, my Dad is 76

I remember Les Leask who was about my age (b 1944) and I also remember your dad Malcolm
I have a Clegwell class photo with your dad on it and I think one of him on a Reyrolles trip to the Continent (Germany or Switzerland).

I pretty sure Malcolm Leask is on the bottom left of the photo in the light coloured top with a mate having his arm around his shoulder?
May be GED B might help with names.

I l studied them all and decided it was the same lad, even though I just remember him as a schoolboy. I remember his Mum, a lovey lady.
