The School leaving age now 18 it appears

No wonder there are very few school leavers going into Trade jobs.

This means that 3 years of vocational trading has been lost for the likes of fitters and turners etc..

Could we be over educating some students ?

As a country we need to make and maintain things or buy from abroad or bring in people from other countries to do these trades.

Maybe we have a problem of our own making.

England
You can leave school on the last Friday in June if you’ll be 16 by the end of the summer holidays.

You must then do one of the following until you’re 18:

stay in full-time education, for example at a college
start an apprenticeship or traineeship
spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training

Mac, sounds like a good system . Perhaps could add one more thing , if no e of the above applies add two year conscrription into the military.

While waiting to be served in a food hall got talking to a couple and the chap worked in a company that employs about 250 people.

They have great difficulty in getting apprentices to take on the jobs available. A sort of not wanting to get their hands dirty thing.

Obviously there is more to it than that.

We all cannot be working on computers etc.

I read that some university graduates or similar end up serving in bars etc. never using their qualifications. This possibly due to too many highly qualified people chasing too few jobs.

Is the system now not fit for purpose.

My granddaughter is 15 in a few days and she has her career mapped out already having decided up on it 12 months ago.

She knows that it may come down to being in the right place at the right time. Already in the last 3-4 weeks things have been revised to take in changes that have come up.

I think she will stay at school until 18 as the school is perfect for what she wishes to do.

The apprenticeships lost because of thatcher devastating traditional industries in 80s then Blair pushing meaningless University courses and student debt.
We should be leading the growth in green industries, building the wind turbines on the river etc.

David the traditional industries declined because they did not modernise or were allowed to modernise.

Ship building declined due to lack of modifications to the way they worked.

The Far East came and looked at our methods and went back and and built massive docks to build ships instead of slipways and narrow rivers which restricted the size of ships.

I worked in the structural steelwork industry from 1958 to 2003.

There it was always the new kids on the blocks took over from the olde firms but the 1988 crash made the firm that I worked become uncompetitive and it closed in 1992/3.

Part of that was that we always bought British Steel products but others bought products from abroad Russia and EU and Far East.

Maggie gets blamed for an awful lot. The coal mining industry was over producing and uncompetitive as well.

Darling Arthur really killed it off, but for him there would have probably been a more gradual reduction in the number of pits. However that is conjecture.

These days it’s better to build or set up a company away from the old industrial areas to avoid Unions. In a few years that may change hopefully. When I left Tyneside in 1969 it was to a company that had no union problems followed going to two other companies that again had been no union problems.

The problem we have now Alan, is great young scientists, set up high tech companies and our Government is happy for them to be sold to any Country. At the moment a semi conductor company bought by the Chinese, one of many other companies the Chinese have been allowed to buy. It seems Mr Grant Shapps is happy with this, but reading business journalists , it’s selling the family silver. We never learn.

Sheila my grandad used to describe it as pennywise but pound stupid, for some reason successive governments has sold anything of worth and the vast amount way below market price. Someone benefitted but it wasn't us.

Alan, some of your points are valid about shipbuilding and mines but not all.
Shutting them all down and losing complete industries has cost the country, we should not have moved from manufacturing to service economy but maintained both Blair was guilty of this as badly as thatcher in encouraging migrant Labour which kept skills, well paid jobs down.

PERHAPS A SOLUTION OF SORTS ., Cuba has an abundance of doctors who they loan to Venuswala in exchange for oil. Op their return to Cuba the doctors are guaranteed a position ,house and loan of a car .no loss of skilled labour as the doctor's family remain in Cuba.
