Silver State Classic Challenge in USA ( for mad men)

Just read an article on that about 2 chap that did it in September 2001

They used a Vauxhall Lotus Carlton which they built up from various older cars.

The September run is over 90 miles of closed public roads.

There are various speed sections. Starts at 95 mph up to 180 mph in 5 mph increments and then there is an unlimited.

They were in the 160 mph class.

The object is to complete the 90 mile course with the closest to the average speed of the class.

The modifications to the car(s) to do this race are important.

In their case fitting a F1 type fuel tank and other safety equipment to enter.

These cars are running flat out in hot dusty weather and any mistakes can be fatal. A tyre blowout is By By.

These 2 chaps had to modify cooling to the rear differential just for it to last the race.

The car max is 177 mph but only for a very short time.

The car is changing as it goes through the race as fuel is used which reduces the weight and had an effect on the tyres and handling.

There are some bends or curves after long straights and if not slowed down for them big trouble.

The top unlimited speeds are over 200 mph.

Sorry it was 2000. They came 2nd in that class at 150.3mph.

Only 2 finished in that class with 3 DNF.

In other classes some disqualification for I think going below the set speed limits, there being a maximum as well. Probably a 20 mph either side of the class speed.

At the high speeds the radiators could be punctured by flies never mind stones.

They did the 90 miles in just around 36 mins the road being the N 318 near Ely, Nevada. Heading to Crystal Springs. It runs through desert type country.
