The view as it is today is a bit of a transformation, remember all the pandemonium when the trolley lines came off, in those days Northumberland had so much going for it today, to my mind, it is a miserable place, glad usually only visit about 3 or 4 times a year, when I lived in the north east it was most work days and always on a Saturday.

Sad to hear that Liz, like you I would be shopping in Northumberland Street every Saturday. I loved Fenwicks and Bainbridges, now John Lewis, and of course M & S which was a large store. I suppose Gateshead Metro Centre is now the place to shop.

Coupled with Eldon Square it's still preferable to the Metro centre for us, yes some big names have disappeared but they have everywhere. The downside for me is the lack of local businesses there but you can say the same of most shopping areas in cities. All the stores you mention are still in Newcastle and only M and S are in the Metro centre.

Don’t get me wrong Sheila Northumberland Street still holds some magic but I don’t think it is a nice as it used to be, to my mind it is a bit miserable, maybe I just haven’t moved with the times. I always liked to visit Binns but that is no more, like you we do visit John Lewis aka Bainbridges but hardly ever visit the other shops.

We do visit the Metro Centre but to be honest we park at the M & S car park buy our food shopping, then if we feel like we walk just a short distance to where Goldsmiths is then walk back again.

One of my sisters lives about 10 mins from the Metro Centre and says a lot of place have closed. Pity. I loved Fenwicks - does anyone remember the big rocking horse that was on one of the upper floors, maybe the 4th., but could be wrong.

Mam,Dad and i used to go to Newcastle every Saturday. My trip wasn't complete without a turn on Walter the Rocking Horse in Fenwicks during the 60's.

Davy it would be until that inner motorway was built but don’t remember when that was.

I probably drove on it in late 1959 as learned to drive at the driving school in St. Mary’s place. That schools car was a sit up and beg Ford Pop.

Yes Davy, it was/is the A1 and went through Gosforth. As far as I know it's still the A1. Only the bypasses around Newcastle have changed it now.

John the A1 follows the Western By Pass from the Angle of the North passed the Metro Centre then crosses the river and gets back near the old A1 near Gosforth.

However the Great North Road which was the Old A1 still has the same name at least in parts.

The Western By Pass at Team Valley is a nightmare with very major road works. Lost count of drilling rigs and cranes there were in the beginning of December.

Yes I do Davy
First memories are as a really little un' when the old trams ran down it as well as the other traffic.That would be before 1950.
Then it remained the A1 and I used it regularly, in my car, trolley buses and all, until John Dobson St was built in 1970 and the A1 was diverted up it.
I avoid the now A1 western route as it is often a nightmare. When I am up going to Christon Bank I always use the tunnel. So convenient and easy especially with no nonsense finding coins or using a card.

Saw that view almost every working day Aug 1966 to Dec 1968 as worked in Pilgrim Street just down from Worswick Street.

Only exception would when I went out the back of the offices into Carliol Square.

At a launch time I usually wandered around town. Used to dash to Blenheim St. to model shop but maybe it had gone by then.

Turning right off Northumberland St. into Northumberland Rd. You had BHS on the corner then a Raleigh shop then the Olympia cinema.

Then you had 5 bow roofed buildings which could be garages but what were they ?

The bow roof buildings were for Rosleighs garage (sold Jaguar cars) The buildings were demolished to make way for the construction of John Dobson Street. They moved to new premises behind Central Station, top of Forth Banks but did not seem to last long before closing. The building is still there.

That brings back memories Rossleigh’s.

The only car that I bought in Newcastle was from Adams & Gibbons a Vauxhall Viva de Luxe 90.

With I had had the bit extra to buy the Viva GT.

Being female, my later memory was buy my daughters first walking shoes at Amos Atkinson. It can still make me quite emotional, even though she is now fifty five. Gosh I’m ancient 😳

An old girlfriend of mine worked for Amos Atkinson , the shop is now a Moss Bros.

Amos Atkinson was such a classy shop, my mum took me there quite often for shoes, I always had to come out of the shop wearing the new shoes, lovely.

They had the best record depth in the town, when Callers called it a day Tony Warner the record dept manager opened a record shop called Hitsville USA.

I didnt realise until seeing this post (and googled) that Callers also had shops in Prudhoe St and in Saville Row at one time.
And the Hitsville USA Shop? I dont remember it but apparantly it was in Old Eldon Square.

The Saville Row shop was mainly the Callers Travel business, Hitsville USA also were based on Saville Row for a time it was named after the Motown studio in Detroit that produced all those hits in the 1960s.

I always thought that Windows was a good shop to buy records. Saville Row did have some very good shops.

Callers Furniture Shop was in the Newtown Shopping Centre alongside Station Rd.
It was on Northumberland St Sheila and burned down. I think it was caused by faulty Xmas Lights.

My sister bought a Music Centre from the Hebburn branch Mac.
JARROW branch was Travel Agency.

Callers was in the shopping centre we bought some of our furniture from there.it was on the corner at the Station road entrance .I also remember John Munro had a record shop next door to the pork shop.

Windows for a long time didn't really cater to the rock and soul fans hence Callers did very well, they couldn't be faulted for their classical section and traditional sections but started to change in the mid to late 1960s and become more mainstream in their musical offreings.

I started buying records in 1958, to be honest I used to buy lots of records from a shop in Pelaw called Lucy’s, it was a shop that sold lots of different things. It was in the early and later into the 60’s when I started to shop for records in Windows so that would fit in with what you say Brian.
