Just heard they are going to build a covid statue in the cemetery. Hope we're not paying for it.

Something we really need - really?? - We have all suffered during Covid to varying degrees, some losing
loved ones but I think there are other priorities to spend money on in Hebburn, Hebburn generally comes bottom of the list financially as far as STC is concerned & with all due respect this is something else we don't need.

Inspired by the arty types at the Mill Dam Cultural thing? And of course fully discussed at Hebburn Community Area Forum which, of course, all you Hebburn Residents knew about.

Clearly somebody found £70k lying around in the Council Offices and thought "what can we waste it on"?

Mike Lynch's Council Yard Bombing memorial

This Council were not interested when the late Michael Lynch asked if we could have a memorial plaque to honour the people/air raid Wardens killed in the Glen Streets Council Yard bombing that also hit houses in Charles St WW2.
The Council showed no interest so Mike had a Memorial Plaque made privately at his own cost & donations. He wanted the Plaque displayed on the Glen Medical Building which was adjacent to the Council Yard but the Council wouldnt help so thanks to the Iona Committee it ended up on their Wall and it looks lovely.

I hope all you locals remember how useless your Councillors are at the coming elections.
They werent interested in a beautiful plaque that told the WW2 Council Yard bombing story.
I pass it on the Iona Wall and think what a great thing Mr Lynch organised for Hebburn.
The Council were not interested in Mr Dunn's offer to display some old photos in the Hub.
WHY are they never interested? it is because Shields Councillors run this council and they have no interest in Jarrow or Hebburn, other than the Council Taxes we pay.

So around £10,000 spent in Hebburn, and looking back I have lived through nothing like it, those that remember the war lived through much greater hardship of course. So perhaps it is fair enough that landmarks should be erected for something that affected everyone to varying degrees, and probably much cheaper than the tombstone campaign, telling us we are in Hebburn, Jarrow, Primrose, Luke’s Lane etc.

To all engineering and shipyard workers those Covid memorials look like they've been burned out of a large slab of steel with an oxy-aceteline torch.
Will there be memorials for victims of Diptheria, Measles, Meningitis & Polio installed later? By me asking this it shows its a stupid idea aswell as wasting council tax payers money.
As has been said the Council weren't interested in the Bombing Victims memorial but thanks to the late Mike Lynch we got one and it was no thanks to the Council. Mike was ex Councillor and was disgusted at our Hebburn 'bunch'.
Just like Ernie insinuates, why do we have Councillors who do nothing for the Town. Just remember this at the next elections.
Remember how I wanted a Feature Wall of 100 framed old photos in the HUB and was told lies saying they have a Plain Walls Policy? another great example of our Councillors.
Another excuse from the Leader (a Whitburn Councillor) was 'it's not art'.

PS. Our local Cemetery headstones were laid down for safety purposes. Then this Council decide to install memorials much taller and easier to push over.

The leader said 'it isn't art' art is whatever it is to a person, it is their to stimulate, bring people together, provoke discussion etc, Sorry but he is talking out of where the sun don't shine!.

South Tyneside Council not fit for purpose

Having left Hebburn over 50 years ago I have followed what has gone on in my home town.

Through the board seen the disenchantment of the folk of Hebburn and no doubt that of Jarrow etc.

There is going to be later this year a North Yorkshire version of South Tyneside Council so we in Harrogate will then loose our council.

So I wonder which town will come out top dog for money allocation etc. will Harrogate become a cash cow for this New Council.

We in Oxfordshire had a vote for or against a few years ago. The vote was against. I votes against, as I had read, The larger the local government becomes, the greater the damage to local democracy. The temptation to vote yes, was having less councillors. To my mind it would just be larger expenses for the ones in the new Unitary Authority. My friend in Somerset tells me they have just moved to a Unitary Authority.
