Saturday's header in Arthur St from 104 years ago

This lovely photo was taken in the long gone Arthur St,built to house the many Miners employed at the Colliery.The celebration was for our Victory in WW1 but how many people died to achieve it.
Millions died and what for?

THAT's the photo I was refering to: And that baby mentioned in the script is My Mam! Born 2nd Dec 1918, in Cowpen Bewley, Stockton. She was Isabel Lavery, Her mother died giving birth, and her father took her to Hebburn on 20th Dec 1918, and handed her over to the Kirtley family (of 44 Arthur Street) to be raised. She was then known as Nancy Kirtley.

There is more to this story, and a bit of a mystery, but I won't bore you all with that!

thanks Norman, this of course was many years before we lived there which was..1940/47 still it was the same, one bedroom upstairs at the front & one more at the back. Many people in those days used the under stairs area in the main living room, for sleeping, a bed fitted easily in there. Off the living room was a scullery. Outside tap, gas mantles for lighting downstairs. No electricity of course, and an outside toilet.

Hi Elizabeth. Did you know the Kirtley family at Number 44? Our Donnie was being raised by them, in the mid-late 40's. Their own 2 sons (Bob & Bill) having been casualties of WWII.

No Malcolm, but I did correspond with Don through this website for many years, he is no longer using it. he remembers my younger brothers Ronnie & Leslie Goodall. I suppose they would play together in the street. I played with Margaret Salmon. I also knew the Hargreaves family, and kept in touch with Jimmy after we moved to York. He is long gone, a nice chap who looked after his mother Jenny all of her life.

Elizabeth , you've described our old shields flat perfectly ., Remarkably it's still there probably built 80 or Ninty years ago , just a guess ,I often wonder what it looks like linside now as it's probably been renovated several times but the square footage would be the same limiting what they could do with it.? Could have spread out over the back yard I guess.

Eight is my count, and some of those maybe too old, or infirm for military service. My Grandad Kirtley had already been in the Army, but was invalided out around 1907 in South Africa.

Just demonstrates the massive loss in men-folk.

yes, we lost a whole generation of men, so sad.Hard on the womenfolk too.
