Tuesday down Shields for the expats

I know some of our expats enjoy seeing other familiar parts of our area so here is another one from 'down Shields'. I add the information to the photos when possible so our descendants in the future will know what they are looking at.

Re The Scala, do I recall that it became an Odeon and that it also had either an entrance or an exit next to Minchella's?

Great Picture Norman, wish I had a pound for how many times I stood on that very corner. Not a great pub but very convent.

its a bit confusing this. The Scala must have had a door on Ocean Rd along from Minchellas as well as the door on Mile End Road.

It was also called the 'Gaumont' and later the 'Focus'.

I said Odeon but you are correct it was the Gaumont I was referring to! Sorry.
But I never knew that there Was an Odeon where you placed it. Thanks for that info.

It did have two entrances Norman the Ocean Road entrance was closed around 1960 and converted to a furniture store.

The Odeon was in King Street, right hand side on the way to the Market. Later it changed to Woolworths.

The entrance to the Odeon was next to M&S, it was a narrow frontage as most of the cinema was behind King Street, Woolworths was closer to the Market.

I used to go to the Saturday morning matinee at the Odeon.

Neary all men on the street . All wearing caps or hats , shirt ties certainly a dress code of sorts unlike today's casual atire
