Newcastle's Grainger st in the 70s showing the electic powered Trolley Bus not long before they died off.

That is one of the streets in Newcastle that has died a death over the years. Ever since Woolworths closed down.

Woolworths had two stores in the city centre Northumberland Street and Clayton Street.

Grainger and Clayton Street either side of the Grainger Market, Clayton Street is a sad shadow of what it one was.The Woolworths premises is a discount store, the only place I ever visit is Richer Sounds, Tescos have a store opposite the Grainger Market pubs. Grainger Street is the busier of the two but a lot of the shop units change businesses regularly.

Richard Grainger, the town builder actually lived for a while at 36 Clayton St. Hos friend was John Clayton was Town Clerk as was his father Nataniel before him. It was John who cleared Grainger of bankruptcy by selling off Graingers assets. Clayton once lived in the Red House buildings so there's an awful lot of history in the street! Strange chap was Grainger! He had 13 children and rebuilt Newcastle at the same time!

Clayton St suffered with absentee landlords for years, and remember grass and small bushes growing out of the guttering of many lovely buildings.

My recollections of Grainger St. were Murtons -toys and sports gear and the Grainger cinema. I also think Bainbridges had a side entrance onto Grainger Street.

Sorry forgot to mention Farnons, that was such a weird but interesting store, just next to the Grainger Market side entrance if I recall.

All interesting information but I don't think Grainger was given the recognition he should have had. Without him I dread to think what Newcastle would look like today.

Remember those crazy leggo men dancing around in the Haymarket. The introduction of this rubbish and Dan Smith's "walkways in the sky". That was our council's competition for Grainger. Council lost that one but they are still trying.
