This is a photo that I took way back in 1968/9 showing what we called 'The big beach'.

The ‘then’ photo is mor interesting than the now, maybe I am just nostalgic???

Liz Dance, I agree with your opinion comparing the difference between the two photographs. That is my opinion of South Shields down town core. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. They have,are, cleaning it up to much and by doing so washing away the very character of the town center.

I think the white building was where beach goers could hire deck chairs Stan.Maybe Life Guards there aswell?
My photo olderwas taken from the Main Road whilst James's 'Now' one is roughly from where that Morris Traveller is.

Miss seeing the big crane, it was an intriguing part of the pier construction probably unique in its design. It was still in working condition as shown in steam up in one of Norman's photo before being moved. Where did it go hopefully not to the scrap yard ?
