Ship in Leith dock toppling over

Be interesting to see why she is leaning over about 30 degrees.

Reading various comments in the newspapers as to why?

First sh has a LOT of top hamper so prone to the wind.

In dock she should have had adequate blocking and propping or shoring.

The wind could I suppose have caused the blocking and shoring to become loose due to vibration.

Has she been in dock too long and the blocking and shoring timber dried out therefore shrinking.

I assume that she would not have onboard her normal amount of water ballast

This happened in Smith's dock North Shields in the 50s. Peter Cook will probably remember. I think it was a tanker called Vardefjell or similar. Flooding the dock slowly with care should bring this one back upright

Yes re flooding the dock after a inspection of hull.

We had one in Palmers that listed Abit no harm done, as mentioned emptied the drydock and re braced.

A little off topic, while working at Palmers every one downed tools and gathered at the river side to watch the launch of the hull of a new ship on the otherside of the river.There were the usual drag chains attached to swing it parallel to the river WELL it slid out into the river and instead of turning came directly across in our direction, there was a mad scramble off the dockside,a surge of water and river rats where we had been standing
The hull hit our side before angling where it was supposed to go with minor damage.
