The A1 road from London to Edinburgh in Newcastle

A view of Northumberland St in 1958, when it was also the A1 road.
Remember the horrible exhaust fumes that couldnt be avoided, trapped in by buildings either side.
It was worse in Worswick St with parked Buses pumping out diesel fumes. Why did the drivers sit with the engines running?
It would definitely have been a lot healthier in earlier times when Trolley Buses & Tramcars were used in the City.

Worswick Street had a smell to it as you walked fown to your stop, as you say diesel fumes permeated the air.

Don’t forget the god awful smell coming from the Hot Dog sellers how anyone bought from those people is a mystery to me.

The old photo is, always Norman, fantastic, Northumberland Street was so busy in those days, everyone looks so well dressed, so many people.

Used to love them hot dogs,straight out the flicks Sunday night one for the road, and one for the bus (IF WE HAD THE MONEY). Plenty onions please .

We had a conversation about the delights of the Keegans hot dog barrows and their vendors a week or two back, they weren't for the feint hearted.

I remember when l was in the TA posted in Ellison st drill hall in the latter years of the 1950s being a member of Peter battery Royal artillery using 25 pounders we would have firing practice at Otterburn ranges Northumberland.vwe would assemble earl on a Saturday morning out side of Ellison st drill parading 4 guns 4 Quads 4 trailers quite a long parade we had 4 motor bikes 2 at the front 2 at the back quite a long coloumn to get to Otterburn ranges in those days one would have to through Newcastle on. The A1 through on to the old military road being a Saturday morning Newcastles Northumberland st was heaving we had a breakdown l remember always shoppers would give us a shout or a clap we held up Northumberland st for about 30 minutes every one was fine about it kids enjoyed jumping on the guns.
When l go up to Newcastle these days those memories of the 1950s kick in especially on Northumberland st Newcastles HUB.happy happy days.

Tom Barker, Tom what you described sounds like the FULL Canadian Militiary breakdowns and all push comes to shove we can rely on our neighbours to the south to help us out. Nice you have good memories of your youthful service,the locals always seemed to like a parade. Thank you for sharing.

When your young and hungry, you don't give a monkeys about clean, or if someone's washed there hands or not,you'd literally eat anything enjoy it and still be alive 60 years on. (So there).

Eating a little dirt and germs never hurt a healthy person, good to reinforce the immune system. Now where did you say they were selling those hot dogs?
