Destroying beautiful trees.

A friend visited today and asked if we had seen Audlett Drive recently. In 1978, we moved to a new build. The back of our house looked onto Audlett Drive and a farm and Radley College in the village of Radley. The college had sold the land the houses will were build on. Going up to the main road they planted lots of trees. Through the years the trees have grown and were beautiful. When we sold the house in 1984, the couple bought it because the loved the view to the farm. My friend showed me photos of the trees all chopped down and the fields, part of the farm being prepared for houses. Abingdon is being concreted over and villages are being joined for all these houses. How can people afford £800,000 plus or are the developers buying them, then the tax payer will have to pay the rents for our new citizens..

I think that's very unlikely Sheila, The feeling of trees is getting out of hand A council started falling trees at 1.a.m. in the morning to try and foil locals in what had been described as an urban forest/wood again in the name of development,they got a halt to the works but not before around 120 were felled. The leader of the council who pushed it through was interviewed in the street where he lives which was lined with trees.

Sheffield council were hauled over the coals for similar actions

Brian, do you mean the houses might be bought for rentals is very unlikely. I’m not so sure as there are just so many houses being built, where will we get people with that sort of money. It’s unbelievable how much countryside is being built on in our town. But the trees had grown and made a lovely tree lined road , between the houses and farm.

The government set a cap on what is paid for rent, a house with that price tag would go way over the cap rent wise.

Brian, I just thought, the government are having problems finding suitable large family homes for the legal Afghan refugees. I honestly must not have a clue what salaries are today, but the houses prices are unbelievable. When we were young buying a new house was cheaper than buying an older house.

Sheila young couples are unlikely to get on the property ladder nowadays unless they have a very well paid job and or wealthy parents.
The strange thing with mortgage companies is they will refuse a mortgage for £600per month although they are paying in excess of a £1000 a month in rent as they haven't saved thousands of pounds for deposit.
The safest way nowadays is something that some Housing Associations are doing you take a percentage mortgage where you pay so much mortgage and so much rent and as it goes on you increase the percentage of the mortgage and reduce the rent percentage.
A fair few are getting on the property ladder this way.

I think we have some houses built that do half rent and half mortgage. We might end up like Switzerland. They are allowed to hand their mortgage to the next generation. I remember being told that by a friend who’s sister and husband was buying a house in Switzerland.

I read a story the other day that younger people are now ‘fighting’ with the older generation to buy bungalows this means that the older generation can’t downsize as quickly as they might like to.

Sheila, I remember the last time we drove through Oxfordshire we were amazed at the amount of new development going on, we are currently up in Northumberland, just driving round up in the north it seems as though new estates are being built all over the place, haven’t seen new doctors surgeries and the like being built at the same time!!!

Rent to buy is available here depending on your income. What really bothers me here is the number of older homes owned by out of province people, unocupied,left to rot away. My house 25 years old,is a unique construction right on the water, the owner lived in it for one year it was either rented out or remained empty and was starting to deterate. Owners should not be allowed to let their property self destruct while others are in dire need for affordable acomodation.

Liz, I can’t believe what is happening in our town and the surrounding villages. Who will buy all these houses. All the countryside is lost for ever. Concrete everywhere. A village near us has lost their surgery and are waiting to see what happens. It’s very worrying as my friend was telling me her surgery is taken over by an American company. Going just like a lot of Vets and the Americans sre only interested in making money. Prescriptions are being replaced with cheaper drugs that are not as good, although supposed to be the same. I had a problem with my inhaler, but my lovely Doctor let me have my original. This is the Government not trying to save money, not the GPs. The receptionist told me the Goverment tells the Doctors to use different drugs.

100 year mortgages are common in Germany too.

We had a German couple living next door in the early 1980’s. He was a scientist at the JET project at Culham. She said not a lot of people owned property in Germany, most rented. They were buying a house that would accommodate her mother. He mother was in East Germany, but she will be retiring age soon and the East Germans would let her cross to the West when she retired. They didn’t want to keep people who were too old to work. Interesting she was on holiday at a relatives, when the East Germans built the wall and she never went back home.

The best time to plant a tree ? Twenty years ago it takes them that long to start maturing. I'm not a tree hugger by any means but there is no excuse or reason to canabilize the land for housing or profit.
