I've added some locations to the photo to help ex pats figure the view out as its change a lot.

I lived in Ellen Court (left hand block) briefly in 68 while we waited to find a house to buy.
It was quite nice for the time. Easy walk to the Station and to the Con Club!! Not forgetting Club Franchi!
Days long gone.

First question. Those tower block have been re clad since 1988.

Is the new cladding SAFE ???

Yes James.
I notice that the old Fire Station is still there in Wylam St but looks sadly neglected.
And when was the Cottage "dropped"?
I find it quite sad that the largest commercial property in lower Ellison St is the jobcentre.

I watched the Cottage pub getting demolished around late 2000, near Christmas. I don't know when it was closed as a pub though.

Jarrow is one of those towns where High Street isn't the high street in modern parlance i.e. the main shopping street. I wonder about the history of the name.

1810 it was the main street comprising of miners cottages called High Row at the top and Low Row at the bottom.
1880 both renamed as one High Street still the main street in and out of Jarrow.
It was the main street and main bus route in and out of Jarrow right up to the mid 1960s when they opened the flyover in and out of Jarrow.
