Yearning for the past.

Most of us look back with rose tinted specs to our youth. You know when your first pint in 1960 was 1/1d (6p..I paid £3.95 last night) and when your first house in 68 was £3500 and many more examples.
Believe me I struggled to pay those prices so I had to "cut my cloth" and turn to my Dad for help.
But despite the obvious rises I think that most people in the UK are better off overall.
I concede that climbing onto the home ownership ladder is very very difficult for many young folk and many also find day to day living difficult. I did in my married life.
But I wonder if there was less spent on junk food and takeaways and delivery systems. Taxis as a norm. If cooking with proper ingredients became the normal again! If constant upgrade of smartphones wasn't a need. If tattoos and face jewellery were avoided. No smoking and vaping......would that help to some extent?

Mr Grumpy, right on the mark, if there were none or little of the above folks would not miss many meals at home. Home cooking and purchases at grocery stores would be more selective. Probably a little more family interaction as a result of meal times. Need to park the car more and do a little more walking. But there was and is good in the old and new life styles as to who is better off ,we can judge but it is what it is for the younger generation.

Very fair points, Mac, but I wonder if the problem over and above what you suggest is that these days people seem to think they have a right to anything they want and they want it NOW.

Peter,you are absolutely correct, new house two cars in the driveway, max out line of credits,vacation abroad each year, millionaire fa ily, what else can I have on credit,nothing aside for a rainy day, don't mean to sound doom and gloom but there is to much entitlement in today's society., Entitlement to have any value should be the result of earnings it, there is no equal standard in lifes journey. Looking back I had more poor happy days with less to look after and no one was trying to take what I didn't have away from me.

Spit on Mac and Peter most younger generation seem to think they have an entitlement to everything without having to work for whatever it is they want. When I wanted to buy my first property I took in extra jobs to get the deposit together, I had my Monday to Friday job, then I worked a few nights a week at whatever I could find, then Saturday I worked in an estate agents.

I remember looking for my first flat it was in Chiswick, the prices were about £8,000 for a 2 bed roomed flat, it was about 6 months by the time I had found what I wanted and the prices had doubled, luckily I had saved enough for the deposit that was back in the late ‘70’s.

In those days and we’ll I to the ‘80’s interest rates kept rising, I think the last rise my husband and I had was when it hit 15%, also getting the first mortgage you had to wait for a few months to get the mortgage offer, was it worthwhile- yes it was, would I do it again yes.

Got to agree with everyones' comments.

Saw a young "Lady" being interviewed on TV, complaining about having to use a food bank, and wondered, how much did you spend on your tatoos & piercing? LOADS of them....

But, as they say, nostalgia isn't what it used to be....

So what's wrong with this picture ,my tax dollars at work , family of three on welfare quite capable of working , house rent and utilities paid plus food allowance and medical., He works daily for cash drives a clunker no Insurance or safety inspection. Goes to the food bank to assist feed his three pet pigs and turkey,heavy smoker but rolled his own cigarette buys his tobacco tax free at the Indian reserve. Who is the real turkey in this quite common life style ?

I dont want anonymous people picking on my Board regulars.
It;s obvious a 'Clunker' is an old vehicle thats dropping to bits.
And everyone else knew what an Indian Reserve or Reservation was as its mentioned many times in Cowboy Films.

Clunkers were the early form of mountain bikes built up by Gary Fisher and pals in California.

Bits assembled from various bike parts. They went on to be some of the big MTB cycle firms. I ride 2 modern bikes by Specialized and MTB and a gravel e bike.

They probably took the name clunker from cars built up from various cars or pickups but that’s guessing.

Not every contributor to this board has been English , just as not everybody on this board has come from Hebburn but will all have had connections in one way or another. Don't assume Sandancer.

Sometimes, I don't know why I bother, but let me explain, in simple language:

1) If you don't know what a clunker is, or an Indian reserve, perhaps you need to educate yourself a little?

2) Don't try to represent ME, with your comment "most people on this board are English & don't understand..etc..etc I FULLY understand, and how would YOU know that board members don't understand? Have you spoken to them all, and asked them?

3) When you post a message, why not try something interesting/informative/funny, instead of just being derogatory? You may find that you might have a nice day!

And I have a side-bet that you won't even answer this....I'm holding my breath!
