History of the Tyne

Do you want to hear of the history of the Tyne by someone who worked on the Tyne and took his trade all over the country and over the world or some bank clerk who went on holiday all over the world eh? it is up to yous times running out...

Hi Vin. I, for one, am interested in the history of the Tyne, from someone who worked there.

But why make the comment "it is up to yous times running out..."??

Well Malcolm my health is buggered I'm in my 73rd year crippled with COPD and blood clots in and out of hospital the last few years but what you want to know about working life on the Tyne in my 73 years.
Worked in every shipyard and nearly every dockyard on the Tyne from 1965 to 2000 some time weeks sometimes years
Out my time at the Naval Yard Walker in 1972 went to sea as a PO Mechanic for Esso Marine for 2 years. As an example paid off in Leslie's in 1973 for bad timekeeping as a Tradesmen I went back in there as a semi skilled stager/scaffolder a week later and the Plumbers Manager Jobling was not happy but there was nothing he could do about it.
Managed to get on most of the super tankers after that in swans in my trade as a marine plumber.
Worked on the banana boat in Hebburn Palmers 1975.
Worked on the last Ship in Brighams 1975 and had a few months after that in Smiths Docks and the Mercantile.
The yards all collapsed due to the tories in the late seventies worked at Brigham Cowans then on the last ship.
Then extensively travelled the UK for work i.e. Power stations, oil refineries. Oil rigs. Nuclear power stations.
Worked on half the oil and gas rigs round the UK in the mid 80s and late 90s.
Worked on the Forties Field for over 10 years 1988 to 1998.
Back to the demise of the Palmers Dock under Camell Laird in 1999 to 2000 then Devonport Dockyard on the Nuclear subs for 2 years.
Missed a load out as I am not sure of date such as Seal Sands 70s, Coryton Mobil Refinery late 70s Nigg Bay and Stornoway early 80s Sellafield mid 80s
Will put my full CV on if you like which the tax has a copy of such not afraid to publish on here.

But tell me bonny lad what jobs you done that make you feel good... That the tax man knows about?

The collapse of shipbuilding on the Tyne had nothing to do with the Government.

Like all industries the younger kids on the block found ways to do the work cheaper. The width of the Tyne did not allow for launch of bigger ships.

If the shipbuilder had got together and built big building dock say in Jarrow Slack things may not have gone downhill so quick but then the shape of the river etc. may have prevented that.

I think that you have a very odd view of things and there appears to be a lot of bitterness in you.

Why do you keep knocking people? From the amount of jobs that you appear to have had did you not get on with your workmates or bosses!

What’s all this crap about TAX.!

Sort yourself out lad you could be a mine of info but Chuck it all away.

I've worked contract all my life and in a few countries. I've even been sacked a few times but I'm not bitter. At least I know they were thinking about me!!! Tax? Once worked in Algeria and found a postcard with one camel against the Sahara. Sent it to the tax office and put "lovely weather, wish you were all here"! Life can be funny too Vin.

Well said Allan, not at all sure where Vin is coming from and his reference to Tax ? I also worked I’m many yards, served an apprenticeship at Hawthorne Leslies, went to sea as an Electrical Officer, also worked in Wallsend and Smiths Docks, Wallsend , Neptune, Walker, and Palmers. Finished as Company Quality Assurance Manager, enjoyed many happy days and made numerous good friends, paid my Income Tax as did all employees.
