A View from Newcastle Central Railway Staion early 1900s

This postcard photo was taken from roughly outside the Central Station looking towards the 'Father of the Railways' monument of George Stephenson on Neville St- Westgate Rd junction.

I was looking at the cars on the photo as well as the ladies attire and to be honest I thought it looked more 1930's.

I like you Brian was a little confused, the cars look a bit modern and don't fit with the age of the picture. I would even put them later 1940.

The 2 ladies crossing the road on the right.

The lady on the right in lighter dress.

I have a photo of my mother wearing one almost exactly like that and I’m on it age about say 4 ish so about 1946 ish.

So photo just post WW11.

However it could be a dress still used from pre war days.

The two car seem to be late 30’s early 40’s

Got to agree with both of the previous gentlemens' comments:
The ladies skirt/coats are calf-length (1940's?) early 1900's would have been ankle length?
And the cars? Wheels with hub caps? Early 1900's, cars had only just appeared, usually with wooden spoked wheels.... But I'm no expert in either area!!

I go for the late 40's too. I think that the shiny black car is a Vauxhall Wyvern and they were first built in 1948. No later because trams in Newcastle stopped running March 1950

I dont think that that leads us to date the pic as the 30s because Binns ads on the trams and buses never, ever included the legal title, simply "Shop at Binns".

I can't remember a Binns Ltd as a advertisment. Just as you sat Mac. By 1924 every tram in Sunderland had the advertisement Shop at Binns on its front.

Think the Wyvern was a bigger car than that, looks more like a Ford or Morris. Great picture though !

I am still convinced that it is a Wyvern. The bonnet ornament, the split drivers side window, the front handle and the white wall tyre all point toward it.
Funnily enough, but without any evidence , I think that the Grey car is probably a Ford.

Mac I agree it’s a Vauxhall Wyvern. They started to build then in 1948.

That car appears to have been supplied whit white painted wheel rims not whitewall tyres.

I cannot remember seeing one but I must of.

Dad bought a 1956 Wyvern second hand I think probably in 1958 ish. I started to learn to drive in it. Reg. no. XTN 116 Black.

Still remember the clutch pedal. It was a curved shaft that went down into the floor and column change.

He sold it and bought a SAAB 96 in 1963 from the dealer that was alongside the Tyne Bridge on the Newcastle side. JCU 96 or 996.

Then he bought an Austin 1800 and finally a 1977 Vauxhall Chevette I have had that Number plate on all my cars since then.

`Curiouser and curiouser!' cried Alice. The car certainly looks like a Wyvern which was introduced in 1948. In 1950s Trams stopped services in Newcastle that year. So between 1948 and 1950? Doubt it. Skirt lengths are the problem. In 1947, the introduction of Christian Dior's New Look skirt provoked reaction against its longer length, and action groups were formed to campaign for the reinstatement of short skirts which had prevailed during the war years 1939-45. So picture not of the war years - nor is the car. Very odd-take your pick.

Notice one car has doors opening front to back,suicide doors, weren't they banned ? Might date the car. I know very little about the parts on cars, Wings are fenders,bonnets are hoods,boots are trunks, Windscreens are Windshields,petrol is gasoline and to top it off, must be right, the steering wheel is on the right ? Hi George
I can see you reasoning but first of all I doubt that the ordinary folk in Newcastle were switched on to Christian Dior's New Look(my Mum certainly wasnt) and were still battling with the privations which followed the war years and the strict rationing of clothing which they endured until 1949 and which restricted the amount of new clothing they could buy.
So for various reasons I stick with 1948 to March 1950 with my best bet being 1949.
