Its a sunny day here in Hebburn so off to Shields again

As it's a nice sunny day (so far

) so I thought we'd have a Shields photo as a Header. If you turned left at the Bank hidden behind the bus with the Scotia on the opposite corner you were in King St where all the shops were, with the Market Place at the far end.Its a bit different these days as no traffic are allowed in King St.

Does anyone know what the white building on the left was in the 1950's. It seems to have been upgraded and is Life of Riley now
As a young lad who often used the bus stops just about opposite I really should know but have no recollection of the building even!!
By the way does the Scotia still operate. In the Google photo it looks......unloved!!

Mac it's closed and up for sale if you have a spare £185k. It wasn't doing that well when it closed, you would probably have to invest a fair amount to get it up and running to a decent level.

Looks like a very buisy intersection. Looking at all the overhead wires, look like Trolley Bus wires, I don't remember them. The single decker bus looks like one of the Economic buses used to run up to Sunderland believe they are no longer in business. The bank in question was not very buisy even in the mid fifties, businesses declined rapidly as South Shields was no longer an industrial town. The good news as Norman pointed out its a sunny day, enjoy a minchila ice cream as you are out and about where ever you are. Here the first day of the Fall Season is also sunny. Thank you for the photograph Norman.

Alan, I think you are right that it was a furniture shop but can’t remember which one, would be funny if it was Hardy’s !

Yes Liz, Fenwicks did have a store on Fowler Street. Opened in 1962 but closed 2017 Can't remember if it was that building though.

Rhoda- I knew South Shields pretty well as both sets of Grandparents lived there and I have no recollection of Fenwicks in South Shields. Perhaps Norman has some info. on location etc.

Apparently Fenwicks was based at 6 King Street in 1833 that building later became Woolworths.

Fenwicks apparently located to 44 King Street when it opened as a furniture store in October 1890, it later became Hardy and Co furniture store in 1939.

Thanks Liz - another mystery solved. I never actually shopped at Fenwicks in South Shields as I worked in Newcastle for many years and shopped at their Northumberland Street branch. Continued to do that until we moved South in 1988. I still miss them. Can only think I have been told, perhaps by my sister in law who worked in Fenwicks, that there was a branch in South Shields. Have just googled and that said they were situated in Simonside. Can't bring that to mind at all.

Fenwick's in South Shields passed me by. I was totally unaware despite being in the town almost every week from the 1940's to early 60's.

I don't remember Fenwicks in Shields either, yet I remember Woolworths and Binns clearly.

I just found out half an hour ago that Alfie Worthington died some years ago. What a shock as I'd been wondering about him when I saw him on my Croft Tce 1955 class photo. RIP old pal from our Wardley Colliery days

Here are som Fenwick names in South Shields 1914. Could one be the famous Fenwick's in Newcastle?

Norman - Googling - Fenwicks of Newcastle you can pick up Wikipedia - Fenwicks began as Mantle and Furrier founded in 1884 by John James Fenwick ,born in Richmond North Yorkshire in 1846. In 1881 or 182he opened his own shop in Northumberland Street.

The Wikipedia information makes interesting reading
