This aerial photo was taken in 1950 around the time when a travelling Fun Fair was operating on spare land at the end of Tennant St-North Farm Rd.
What we called 'The Copperworks pond' can be seen across the railway lines. In the 1940s young kids used to get to it by walking along the riverside, past the Rubbish Tips (Now buried under Hebburn Marina greenery) where we saw the derelict buildings of The Tharsis Sulpher & Copper Co who had closed down long before leaving broken down buildings and that dangerous deep reservoir. The reservoir had brick lined sides that sloped at a steep angle. If anyone tried 'plodging' they would just slide into the water..
A little lad I remember was 8 yr old Colin Colqhoun from the Quay School area and he sadly died in that 'copperworks pond' May 1954. That pond was an attraction to local kids because they could catch little sticklebacks in it, put them in jar and take them home.

I can still see his face Norman, lived on Caledonian St. there was 4 Brothers and one sister

Hi John, I can vaguely remember there was an Arthur, then Sheila and David who I remember well when they moved upto Thirlmere Court. If that accident happened these days, the reservoir owners would be fined £millions because it was unfenced.

To the North side there are two very high roofs with 4 ventilators to each roof.

Just to the north of them are over 15 what looks like entrances to underground storage. Munition stores ? In a compound.

What maybe the office block is to the right, don’t remember that but remember the later tower block.

A big factory The Bottom end as Dad called it and then the start of the Newtown works.

Yet again a great photo Norman.
