I used an alternative OS to Windows 16 or 17 years ago when I worked as a PC technicain and was amazed. I formated a drive and loaded Ubuntu from a disk I was given. It installed everything as a complete package, internet browser , all the drivers etc. connected a network cable and I was on-line in seconds. I didn't need an anti-virus program or anything like that. Well worth trying out on a spare PC or laptop.
