British Weather

I just wonder when summer will eventually arrive, it is really very peculiar weather we are having, yesterday we had a fantastic day, in fact it was so good we had our first BBQ of the summer - today cold, overcast and torrential rain expected before midday!!!

When I think back, our British Summers have always been so unpredictable.
We've had a lot more bad summers than good ones.
A lot of us 'war babies' can still remember the fantastic summer we had here in the UK 1976 when it was sunshine day after day May to August.
Sadly it was freak weather and why going abroad is so popular because its guaranteed sunshine.

I do remember that summer Norman, we did complain so much about it though!!

I remember when we were in lockdown that was a fantastic year for weather, in March when I was staying with my late mum in Bill Quay it was warm enough to sit outside, in fact all during the lockdown the weather was fantastic, it made such a difference to us as we were able to ‘enjoy’ life outside whilst being in lockdown.

Counting on good weather when abroad- about 6 years ago my husband and I were down in the South of France, it was mid June, we were returning to the place where we were staying when suddenly the heavens opened to giant sized hail stones, then luckily we just missed being hit by an enormous piece of ice that had dropped down, we just could not believe what was happening.

A lot may have to do with your working life. Back then you may not have noticed the weather unlike when you are retired.

Back then you were happy if you got a fine weekend so 2 days out of 7. But now we want 7 days.

As Norman says that’s why everybody went abroad, just to get hopefully guaranteed SUN.

Mind it’s been a bit of a shock to the system this year, storms, very high temps in the Med area.

No Allan, the midges tend to occur above 1,000 feet above sea level (how the midges know that, I have NO idea) and in damp conditions

As we are about 5 miles inland (about maybe 200' above sea level) we never have a problem.

We overlook the lower Firth of Clyde, views over the Isle of Arran..... TOTALLY gorgeous!!

Years ago we had a diving trip out of Largs to dive on the remains of a Catalina flying boat off Cumbrae.

My Campbell family back in the late 1700’s lived in Lochwinnoch area. Others in Johnstone and Paisley etc.

Good to know that about Midges.

Largs is along the coast from us. Great spot to sit & watch the ships passing, eating ice-cream from Nardinis (Best ice-cream parlour in Scotland!)

Got to fight off the pesky seagulls though Malcolm.Few years back I bought a lovely big Ice Cream from Nardini's kiosk on the jetty...didn't get one lick before it was snatched. Think it knew I was English !!!

Because we speak Geordie or other dialects they tar us with being English.

I’m about 60-70 % Scots and can trace my Campbell family back to about 1750/60 regretfully getting further back is hopeless but I have connections with Caithness and Orkney through my Gunn ancestors.

Yes I’m part Welsh and part English as well.

The English part is Northumberland or Northumbria and that extended down to the Humber way back.

I expect that there are more Scots folk around the world than live in Scotland today.

I’m proud to be a bit of a mixture
Of my Grandfathers Descendants 6 live in England and about 10 in OZ.

There are others of my Campbell family about 40 in OZ and NZ that I know of. There are a lot in various parts of Canada.

My Great Uncle Willies family are Scotland, England, France plus other places.

In our families case we are probably more Scots than a lot of people that live in Scotland.

A lot of Scots are of both Scots and English etc..

When the boarder raids took place they took away some women and guess what happened. Those raids and other wars took women up into Scotland from way way back.

When Alphonse Reyrolle started the company in Hebburn there was a few families that come with him or arrived a bit later.

His family were from the Paris area and his father came over to London and set up, others followed.

I know this because one of my Grandmothers sister married into one of those families and her husband was one of 8 or 10 siblings.
I’ve lost track of them but could I suppose dig back if I wish.
