The Tyne Bridge is 96 years old

This well known 'Tyne Bridge' was opened in 1928.
A few years ago I met an old lady, Marguerite Nicholl who told me her Hebburn father worked on the bridge then & told her there was always a man in a rowing boat employed to pick up men who accidentally fell into the water. No safety gear then and the workers just wore their old shoes/boots and old clothes. No Health & Safety laws then.

Only one man died in the construction of the bridge, a South Shields man called Nathaniel Collins aged 29, a father of four and employed as a Scaffolder. I don't know how many were picked up by the rowing boat.

Went over it yesterday poor Tyne bridge what a state at moment.Traffic very busy if I have got it right no charge for breakdown at moment on bridge .

So many fascinating stories about the Tyne Bridge.

There was an article in the Express yesterday about the High Level Bridge having just undergone a revamp, glad our Bridges are receiving funding to maintain them.

There was talk about funding to carry out refurbishment a while back.

Shelved no doubt.

Liz, there is book dedicated to the High Level Bridge. The pillars below the Tyne are hollow and solid above.when it opened it had a wooden road and a toll booth which was still there a few years ago. It is written that when the first train went over, the driver said to the fireman, "Here's for heaven or hell". It had had extensive repairs as the cast steel began to laminate...
