I added the locations on this Britain from Above aerial view taken above our neighbouring town of Bill Qauy in 1937 before ww2 started. Hebburn has changed tremendously since those days.

Just to the left of the B in Bill Quay is what possibly be a rail or old tram track. Going along to above Pelaw Main Staiths.

Whatever it was lots of changes.

Any idea as to what it was originally

Love these old photo's, although, because of my youth(!!) it's difficult to relate places.

But one thing I have seen (and there's a closer look from Britain from Above) that to the east & south of the cemetery are a lot of allotments....

What was to become Queens Crescent (did I mention that I was born there?) Toner Ave, Johnson Ave, Dukes Ave, Burns Head Road etc.....

Victoria Road West from Reyrolle’s sports ground to Mill Lane.

You can see that all the houses are very new so probably built after 1930.

By the start of WW2 the housing to Blue House Road and Crawley Ave almost complete but with gaps now filled with council housing as was.

Regarding the allotments near the Cemetery, cannot remember them at all. If I was taken to Hebburn Park it must have been through the Cemetery from Victoria Rd.West but more likely from Grandmothers.

The house on the corner of St. John’s Ave across from the Cemetery Wall was built and maybe a few more but photo not clear. Maybe the 1939 Records May give info.

Who lived in that corner house, a bit grand !

Alan, if I’m thinking about the same area the house was built for one of the Oake brothers who were Estate Agents in Hebburn. Some time in the 1950’s another detached house was built near it in St Johns Avenue for Dr Peter Norman.

Sheila you could be correct Oake and Norman.

I know Dr. Millers house was a hundred yards for so down towards the Ambulance Hall.

Dr. Allan had a house. Across from the Rex overlooking the Cemetery.

I remember Dr Millers house was bought from him by St John’s Church as the new vicarage. Dr Swainston lived next door
Dr Michael Norman lived further down the Road, or just around the corner.

My uncle Albert Holiday had end house St Johns ave straight across from gate of Cemetry right hand side stain glass window facing Cemetry wall lovely inside all top wood panelling .He was in business.

The story goes that the wealthy Hebburn Builder Sam Oake who lived at 3 Newton Tce, decided to build a large impressive house in the Town, possibly to show local people how wealthy he'd became.
His house was built adjacent to the St John's entrance to the Park and it is still there today.

Don't think that was Albert's his was not that big must have been other side of street where the Dr lived.

The house on the corner of St Johns Ave fell into a bad state of disrepair and became a bit of an eyesore as the elderly gentleman who lived there simply could not keep on top of it. About 14 years ago the new owner started work to repair the house to it's former glory and what a great job he made of it, with the gardens especially looking marvelous all year round....must have cost him though.

Lovely houses Keith when you are younger and we visited always used to think how posh it was saw it from the gate side of Cemetery gate few years ago looked nice bit tired with age.

I remember when the older guy bought the house, of course he was a lot younger then. He lived with his parents in Alfred Street. I think his Christian name was Nicolas, but I just can’t remember his surname. He had an older married sister. His parents moved into the house with him. I think his father was once the road sweeper. In Hebburn for the council. I can still picture him and his parents

Something unusual

If you look at Mill Lane just below the “ keepers house” there is a wide strip going towards the Cemetery for a short distance.

Maybe just the type of crop put in but could it be a small aircraft landing strip, I doubt it though.
