This morning at my local garage having a new suspension part fitted.

Briefly got talking to a young chap who had just brought his car in.

He said that he had got rid of his e car and bought a petrol car.

Of course I asked why.. Far too expensive to run and difficulty in getting it charged, range useless.

I didn’t ask any further questions but he sounded a little bit bitter.

I did say that my car solo will do over 500 miles on motorway/ Dual roads and about 350 towing a caravan.

I have done 350 miles towing the caravan in France but solo never anywhere near 500 miles but know that it could just from amount of fuel used on a 250 mile trip. Wooler to Harrogate and back in a day or just and over night stop at home, usually for a Hospital appointment or collect a forgotten item.

Provided that I keep my speed at around 55 to 60 mph and good traffic economy very very good.

On one very rare occasion the range that the car quoted when filling up 650 miles possible. However you could never ever get that, too many roadworks, traffic jams.

Of course the longest drive from Harrogate to anywhere in the U.K. would be to Scrabster at the top of Scotland and that is or was 486 miles but is now about 468 miles I see. That probably because of not going through Edinburgh as we had to back then.

Done that 16 times, 8 trips. Then we would get a fill at Inverness.

Driving time usually 9 to 10 hours plus stops if in the Transit van with dive gear. Have done it in a lot less though in a fast car.

Alan.Thats one EV owner,in June of this year Gov records show that there was 1,140,000 EV cars registered on the road.They are a lot cheaper to run than a diesel or petrol by a long way,more and more charging points are available every week in public carparks,supermarkets etc or like me you can have one at home with attractive low rates for during the night use.Most people who have negative comments about EV cars either dont have one or cannot afford one.Nissan at the moment are spending 2bn pound on a new battery plant for EV I dont think they will be wasting their money.

I have a peugeot e208 and would not part with it as it is veery economical. I am with Octopus energy on their go tariff which has just been reduced to 8.5p per Kw/Hr. My home charger Hypervolt pro 3 is going to be adopted by Octopus this month which will drop the tariff to 7p per Kw/Hr. This rate is for 5hrs (12:30 - 5:30 am). I recently did a trip from Hebburn to Ferryhill and back, the car had a full charge when I left and I recharged it through the night total cost £1.13, much less than 1 litre of petrol/diesel so I’m well pleased.
I have also noticed around our area there are more electric cars than a year ago.

Overall my EV cost to run is miniscule. I can handle the range issue. I am very happy. I pay Octopus 7p per kwh overnight (11.30-05.30. automatically)
Colliery Lad and Michael are spot on but put simply don't have an EV if you cannot charge at home.
Don't have an EV if your journeys are regularly 5-600 miles.
Whilst most of my journeys are very local at the end of the month I will be on a longer journey. I already know where I will charge and re-charge during my time away.
There is so much disinformation!

Until the charging problem is resolved plus. Range increased a lot will be reluctant to buy.

Electric cars are cheap if you can install your own charger, some local authorities and housing associations are refusing permission to install them its leaves them stuck as you normally order your electric car a few months. People assume they will get permission and when it doesn't happen people are stuck with having to pay commercial rate.
It leaves people having to pay for charging and can cost more than petrol.

There is no Local Authoritys that I am aware of in this area not allowing chargers Newcastle,Northumberland and North Tyneside all allowing them in fact a lot of newbuilds have them fitted as standard

Don't you get tired of the misinformation that abounds CL. Usually from people who don't own a XCV.

This is the regulation in brief

From June 2022, all new build homes and buildings in England became legally required to have electric car charging points, whether residential or commercial, as part of the Part S building regulations. So, yes, in 2024, all new builds have to have electric car charging points installed on the property ï¿½ but only if they have an associated parking space.

Certain exemptions and conditions do apply.

Yes I know you did I was reinforcing what you said, I know someone who has an electric car and was refused a charge point, the property is another 40 years old, she charges at the local supermarket. It's also down to the local authorities allowing or not allowing drop kerbs .

Yes the actions of Planning Departments are mysterious. I deal with fairly complicated applications within the local parish and am now almost immune to the feelings of frustration when I see bureaucratic process (sometimes enshrined in statute) trumping common sense on such a regular basis.
The suggestion that the current Government can click a switch to change this overnight is pie in the sky I'm afraid.
