Anyone recognise friends or family on this 60 year old photo?
Anyone recognise the aircraft? Is it a Lancaster Bomber?

It’s a successor of the Lancaster, a Shackleton.

It used the same basic design but highly modified.

It's nickname in the RAF was the "Shacklebomber" or 20,000 rivets all flying in formation!

I remember the Shackleton's when I did a stint in Northern Ireland with the Para's, their endurance in maritime surveillance was legendary.

They are contra-rotating propellers

They are probably the same as that powered the Fairley Gannet.

Probably jet turbines if memory correct, phasing out multi cylinder piston engines.

The advantage of that probably that you then have all the aircraft on Carrier using the same fuel.

No doubt the maintenance and reliability better.

It used R R Griffon piston engines when built but those look more like turbo prop intakes which mislead me.

Norman, I think the photo is 1963 -4 time at RAF Kinloss and the aircraft is a Shackleton of Coastal Command.
Back row 3rd from left is Malcolm Robson, 5th from left John Burkett 5th from right Tony Morland. 7th from right is Bruce Laird.
Front row kneeling 1st Left Brian Cooper.
The first 5 names you quote are the middle row in sequence from left to right. Bill Mason was a civilian instructor, the other 4 are officers.

Forgot to say that I believe that I am kneeling 2nd from right.
Davy Preston should be on the photo but I can’t spot him.

Spent 3 years in 1027 Squadron when it was based in Belsfield Gardens, enjoyed many amps at RAF Stations and ended up as Sergeant before leaving to join 233 Squadron Royal Engineers TA.

I think John Mills will remember RAF Benson in Oxford. Indian pilots flying Hunters. Bill Mason was a warrant officer.Flying officer Walter Robinson the butcher from Jarrow must have retired by then. Great days. Jimmy Guy is still the parson for 1027 sqdn.

seem to remember the Queen's Flight was also based at Benson, but we could never get near to it.
Also remember getting kicked off the 25 yard rifle range for some infringement or other.
In later life I was a Warrant Officer with 479 then 2286 Squadrons and became the Wing coach for rifle shooting for Warwickshire ATC......so I must have learnt from my Benson experience!

I live about 20 minutes drive to Benson. I remember when the Queens Fight moved to RAF Northolt in 1995. It is now home to Puma helicopter squadron.

The Queens flight was Indian pilots at the time and heavily guarded by dogs. I recall being blasted about racing across the parade ground when the flag was up. We did get flights in an Avro Ansen flown by a wraf. You may recall also the 30 minute we got in the DH Chipmunk often doing aerobatics. Great days and Duane Eddy playing "Because they're young" on the jukebox. Nice to know you kept it up John!
