I'm really surprised that a repair method we all knew of was not as widely known as I thought it would be.

Perhaps it was only known to Wardley lads.

Just think, I may be able to claim global recognition for it, like Melton Mowbray Pies and Cheddar Cheese.

As I was in the Scouts for years we lived by the motto “ Be Prepared “ so we were, carried puncture outfits and pump.

I have always followed that motto even when cycling in the South of France even to the extent of carrying cycle spares, tyres, tubes, and brake pads. Then spare chain cassette. Chain ring. Brake cables until swapped to hydraulic brakes but had brake fluid and bleed kit and of course various tools, lubes etc.

I had to as away in remote places anything up,to 50 miles from a good bike shop. I ensured that Ann’s bike had wheels etc. that I could swap onto mine if push came to shove.

Thank goodness never required to use the spares but once had to change the rear mech which I had a spare in bike box in the car.

Was I over the top others may think so but not me. Just plan things out as away for either 6 or 9 weeks each year.

I forgot to mention this riding in France started in 2003 both using MTB’s. From 2017 I took 2 bikes my MTB plus a road bike.

I did not carry many spares for the road bike other than tyres. Spares for road bikes readily available in France but not for MTB’s

Allan, again we're in another parallel universe.

Our 1950's survival kit was a bit more basic.

A couple of jam sandwiches and an old lemonade bottle filled with tap-water.

By eleven o'clock the sandwiches were eaten and the bottle was half empty, the water was warm and a dirty grey colour, with bits of half eaten bread floating in it.

The bottle came back home with you though.
There was 3d deposit on it.

Hands up all those who remember this.

I well remember the deposit paid out on empty returns, round at Meggies back shop....
