This rare photo shows Hebburn's short lived Power station that gave the Town it's first electric lighting, making old gaslights & candles redundant.
It possibly closed down because of an explosion (photo below) & why the North Eastern Electricity Board took over.

Does anyone know what caused the explosion. What bit of machinery was destroyed, a Turbine.?

What is that below the N almost looks odd.

Is there a photo before the explosion, I’m sure there was a one on the board not so long ago.

Norman, I don't know if I remember that cooling tower or not? when was it demolished.

Hi John,
The Cooling Tower & Chimney were gone when we went there in the 50s and what was left had been altered by volunteers to serve as a club. People of Lilian Beattie's generation might have been the first ones to use the club, long before us.
