the drill hall

I have never seen anything or at least I cannot remember anything in the drill hall (was it Cuthbert Street?) being on the forum, I was wondering was there a drill hall before that one or did Hebburn lads head to a nearby town.

Sure it was end Cuthbert St where I lived situated just round corner on Ellison st .A memory is going in on a Sunday night and they had films on a large screen .

The Drill Hall frontage was on Ellison St and the building was sandwiched between William St and Lyon St Lane.

I remember it was a fair size building with both the territorial and cadets based there

This early 1900s photo looking down Ellison St shows the Drill Hall on the left just past Atkins 'off door' shop on William St corner.

I didn't think it was as old as that, I thought it was built sometime after 1910.

The parade ground was gone when I was in the cadets in the 1970s, to look at the building it was hard to age, I never thought it that old.

I am older than you (b1944) and lived near the Drill Hall and there was no Parade Ground then Brian.
Ive seen a Parade Ground on an old Map and it was at the end of Tennant /Glen St area in the Newtown.

It's unusual for a Parade Ground to be away from the drill hall, I wonder if there was one outside the drill hall but got swallowed up by development . So was the parade ground up by Reyrolles entrance or council yard area?

I have a photo of my Great Uncle John N. Campbell at Bull Buddon Camp near Carnoustie in 1911.

One on his horse and another outside the lads bell tent.

It is possible that they were all from the drill hall and there could be Grandfathers etc. of board members on it.

Will go on PC and post. You just never know other may spot relations.

Back in an hour or less.

My Great Uncle John worked in Leslie's and lived in Hood Street, Ellison St. and this photo is about 1911. He is the tall chap on the right.

Could a relative of your be in it ? I hope so.

The Photo was probably taken at Hexham.

So will have been with the above Battery.

The photo of him on his horse taken at Bull Buddon Camp, Near Carnoustie.

I assume that as a trainer Gunner he would have been doing the same in WW1. Maybe that's how he survived the war.

The photo is from him to his brother Allan my Grandfather. I think he may well have been near the Somme battle field but there are post card of Ypres so he may have gone back there in later years.

Note the postcard gives the Field Post office number. Not been able to find where that was at that date.

I have been unable to find his WW1 service record.

He is on the Plaque is St. Andrews Church as was.

Any help would be appreciated. Allan C.

That's where my dad and 4 brothers lived hood St one was killed in Sicily in the war no one to ask anything now lovely photo .

I was born in 1940 in the heart of the Quay at no 10 Tyne street just some 200 yards from Ellison st drill hall.The drill hall played a huge part of my teenage years from being in the Durham Light Infantry army cadets at 13 years old,it was great to be with my mates growing up in the the Quay from Primary school the Quay Board school then on to Clegwell we grew up together the cadets was some thing to do some where to go,from there we all joined the TA being 274 field regiment P Battery drill nights were Tuesday and Thursday weekends were Sunday we got regular army pay being a full Bombadeer at 19 years old l got more than l got serving my time at Palmers shipyard 1959 but it was not just the money it was the comadery we went all over firing our 25 pounders most popular was the Otterburn ranges in Northumberland l left in 1961 leaving with some happy memories of Ellison st drill the dances we used to have above all all my childhood friends.mates such happy days.

One in the Quay on Ellison St., one back of Glen Street and another over the road from where Fraser’s used to be.

Probably not all there at the same time though.

Looked at something and saw that the drill hall was on Upper Ellison St. not known it be called on Upper Ellison St. probably an error!
