A Tsunami in the area of the North sea ? Possible?

Some years ago after a big one in Japan the likelihood of one onto the NE coast was talked about.

It would be very very unlikely to occur as it’s not a very volcanic area, however there is a big question that one could occur because on a landslide on the Norwegian Coast.

If I remember correctly there is a huge cliff which they think is unstable and if a large amount goes it will send a huge wave across the North Sea. I cannot remember the height quoted but enough to devastate our east coast.

Some time after that we were diving off the Farnes and some large waves came from a NE direction. When I say large waves but more a swell but came out of an almost flat calm sea. We were in transit at the time, not actually diving. So no problem.

We thought that a large tanker or similar had gone south and it was its bow wave.

On checking after we returned home we found that there had been a big storm in the North Atlantic and the waves that we had were due to reflective wave action from Norway.

A bit of useless information until it happens.

Allan, the cliff is called Prekestolen (pulpit rock) and is in Flekefjorden near Stavanger. It rises "2000 ft and is a big tourist attraction and you can go by the Clipper tourist boat for a few quid and there's a bar onboard! If it was to fall it would cause a major disaster in Stavanger.

That’s probably the one. If it goes it will destroy a lot of the East coast of the U.K. it was said.

When I lived and worked in Stavanger over 40 yrs ago there was fear of it then.I believe Flekefjord is about 1000 ft deep Allan so I it would cause a big tidal wave if it does go. There's thousands of tons of solid rock hanging over the cliff. Tap in pulpit rock and you'll see it. It takes 1hr 20mins from newcastle to stavanger by air so it would hit Scotland first.

Why is there so much worry about that cliff collapsing.

Are there faults in the cliff like crack’s, wrong type of rock structure maybe a shale type.

It is nearly 2,000 ft above the water. The rock is 80 x 80ft Square and the weight is thousands of tons. Solid rock. However, there is a huge crack along the cliff edge and it is being monitored continuously. You can see tons of photos online.
