The Olympic Cycling events

Having enjoyed the recent cycling events from France, I have been reading of a time when Jarrow and Hebburn drew thousands of people to watch similar events. Please see the link for an interesting read. I was a member of the Barnesbury CC from 1953 until 1970 and took part in various time trial and road races in the north east. At that time, Hebburn had a very special cyclist of their own. Don Taggard.
Just looking at the bike Vic is riding a fixed wheel, no brakes.
A steel frame as they all were back then.
I wonder what the weight of the bike would be as compared with today’s bikes of that type.
The probable main difference is the tyres with fancy compounds that are about these days. All regulated of course.
The main change is to the riders, training, food and drink etc.
These days the body is developed tremendously, look at the shoulders and thighs of Sir Cris Hoy in his hay day.
Everything on the bikes are vastly improved even down to the lubes for the chains.
Since I bought my e bike I changed over to wax lubes. That was one of the best things to do.
No dirt pick up like an oil lubed chain does. I now lube after every 50 to 60 miles which is far more than I should because the roads that I ride have a lot of dust from the chippings on top surface.
He maximum recommended distance is 200 to 300 miles between lubes. There are Squirt lubes for normal bike and a different version for e bikes.
Wax lubes have made it much easier for me to maintain the bikes.
These days they are making lots of changes to cycle wheels and tyres all wind tunnel tested etc.
They have now found that if you have a wider tyre you can ride it at with less effort and more comfort so you end up faster over a distance..
