New Housing Estate - The Ropery

This is being built on the old Frazer's factory which was a steel fabricators I believe.

The road passing in front of what was the County (now Mambo's) next to the Station (Metro) bridge is called Ropery Lane.

Presumably there was an actual ropery factory on that original site?

This photo was loaned to me by History enthusiast the late John Scanlon who's parents lived in what we called 'Collins Lane' an area of Hebburn where a lot of Irish immigrants lived.

My mother worked at a ropery when she left school at 14 but it was in Howden I believe.

Went over to the Howden rope works to measure up for some building works when I was an apprentice.

We finished that job as quickly as we could to get away from the “girls” working there.
Let’s say they were a bit of a wild bunch!
