Thank to the 'Britain from Above' website for recording our towns in the early 1900s. Once again I've added locations to help.

I lived in number 20 on Black Road in the 1950s. This was on the same side as The Clock Hotel. Our flat was the second block immediately after the miners cottages. Nothing special about that except the allotment backing onto our garden was owned by Sunderland centre half Fred Hall. I remember he was a very quiet man and his hobby was keeping homing pigeons. He came from wherever he lived on a bike. I think this was at a time when Sunderland was known as the Bank of England club (not sure about that). The open land behind the allotments was known as The Quarry. It was well known for a group of gamblers to gather and play pitch and toss behind the Clock Hotel after dole day. Some of the local youngsters were paid a small sum to be "look outs".
In the back garden of one of the flats in the second group of similar homes further along Black Road, there was a covered mineshaft - a least that is what we believed it to be.. This was a circular brick construction a few feet high and about 15 to 20 feet in diameter.

I recall Roy Austick who had his business behind Simpsons Hotel. Roy drove a jaguar and I met him at the new build DSS building in Longbenton. I needed 2 small bags of concrete mix urgently as something had cropped up we were not expecting, so Roy kindly loaned me 2 bags on the condition I repaid him with interest! 3 bags! No wonder he drove a Jaguar!

Norman, do you happen to have a photo of the 'Sick place' on Park Rd in Jarrow ?
I was at Mayfield surgery there today, first time (I was with a friend) and we noticed that from the road outside there is still part of the old entrance.
I can't remember the proper name of the building sorry. We went into the chemist there and got chatting about the old building and we all (who could remember) called it the 'sick place'

One of the young staff in the chemist didn't have the faintest idea what we were talking about - do you have a photo that we can show her ?

My mother was born in St Oswald's Road in 1920, and the family also lived in Till St. for a while.

Janice, the chemist was owned by Mr.Charlton and he sold wine making equipment as well. I
In 1973 he told me to use Delrosa baby syrup to make rose wine. Wow, what a kick!

I can pick out our house near the river(10 Riverside Cottages) We passed Simpsons hostel on the way to school. Some dodgy types were always hanging around the entrance.
