Cruise ships and size

An article in a newspaper on Cruise Ship sizes saying that by 2050 some will be 345,000 tones and carry 11,000 passengers.

The Titanic was 46,000 and 2,500.

To built a Cruise ship of that size is to me daft.

I would think that various ports would not allow them to visit just far too many people. They would have to lie offshore as their size just far too big to dock.

The amount of waste that that size of ship that would produce in a day, huge!

She is 246,000 tones so they are talking another nearly 40 to 50% bigger.

Regarding ship sizes you have to be careful when comparing ship sizes.
The tons quoted for a passenger ship are not tonnes weight.
Tons for a passenger ship are a volume measurement- supposed to originate from a wine barrel size - tun. The displacement (weight) of a 300000 ton passenger ship is about half the tonnage - say about 150000 tonnes.
Where as an oil tanker displacement of 300000 tonne would be more than 300000 tonnes since oil tankers are quoted in terms of deadweight- weight of cargo carried - hence you would have to add the weight of the ship (lightweight) to get the total weight.

Lots of fun being on that when full? Even now some ports are talking of restricting Cruise Ship size and of safety concerns

What ships use the Tyne these days? In the late 60s I went from Newcastle to Denmark on passenger ship. All I remember is it took cars as well. Oh and a little rough 🤢

AnnB,This year the cruise ship schedule is showing 105 ships berthing at North Shields the final one on 29/11/24

John,these are all cruise ships which belong to cruise companies,eg Fred Olsen,Mirella ,Holland America,Seven Seas,Norwegian Cruise Lines etc etc
