This photo shows how St Bede's well was cared for in the old days when the public donated money to pay for the Fence & brickwork around the well. One of those boys looking through the fence was Ted Crooks who became a Jarrow Councillor. My playground in the mid 1950s was the Lakes, the Slagheap and this area that we called 'The Dip' a valley between Windermere Cres & Cambridge Ave. All we saw of the Well then was that rectangular top white coping stone surround sticking out of the wet ground & the rusted railings.
