It’s going to be interesting to see the various developments of the recovery phase.

As there is a very limited bottom time at 50 mtrs doing any work not really possible.

50 mtrs is the limit for diving using compressed air. Any deeper and it’s a mixed gas dive.

At those depths the air or gas you breath is far more dense which limits what you could do.

The access into the wreck is going to be very very tricky indeed

You could get lost just getting around the Yacht on the surface but at that depth with all the dive gear that you need horrendous.

I would suspect that she will have to be lifted to the surface before any access can be made. Otherwise top notch professional divers and support team required.

I’m way out of date with Technical or even sport diving these days.

Just looked at BSAC Dive tables from 1988, they are far more extensive now as various gas mixtures included and the guidelines very technical.

They are trying to brake into the hull it appears and there is a break in the hull..

Talk of people trapped in an air pocket, doubtful if any would be alive as any air taken down front the surface will compress to a 1/5 of its surface volume.

But there’s always hope.

Like you I think it's wishful thinking that there could be survivors. How will they bring it to the surface? Buoyancy devices? Crane? Or is there other options?

And....his Co-defendant in the US court case for fraud, both found not guilty after a ten year court case, was tragically killed just 2 days ago, hit by a car whilst out jogging in Cambridgeshire...

Let the conspiratory theories begin!!!

If there was any still alive, which to me is impossible, they have been at 50 mtrs for now 2days?

You would need a decompression chamber at that depth and put say one person in it and lift the chamber to the surface and transfer them into a bigger chamber. Then it would take many days to bring them back to surface pressure.

I doubt that there are any deco tables that cover that!

It’s one thing to put a rescue chamber onto a submarine and get the men out, that has been done in the past.

What happens to the body if there has been no proper decompression carried out, you don’t want to know.

The design of the vessel was stupid I think having a mast of that height. The design of the whole thing just as stupid with the amount of open space inside. How do you make the thing watertight!

I known absolutely nothing nothing about yachts but find the height of the Bayesian's mast amazing. At 246 feet this takes it 43 feet above the top of the arch on the Tyne Bridge at mean water level. I read that the yacht Mirabella has an even taller mast at 290feet. Almost 100 feet above the top of the Tyne Bridge arch. Jeepers!

That’s nearly 100 mtrs.

I’ve never been on a yacht but seen plenty but no where near that size. Probably that was in Cannes years ago but all motor yachts.

The variations in wind speed as you go up a mast of that height, a lot.

The best sailing ships of yesterday were the Clipper Ships which were built for speed carrying cargo it Tea etc.

The fastest ones of today are the one built for the round the world races or the Americas Cup races.

No doubt there are very very fast ones built just for speed, probably those that rise up on foils.

I would suspect that these days due to climate change tall masted vessels unsafe as well as a lot of others. Conditions getting beyond design limits.

When after diving out on the Farnes for many years I know how suddenly the weather can change out of the blue.

Twice it could have been Nasty, and about another three times decided to get back to harbour as things not looking good.

Of course we were all in diving suits and safety gear around us.

However on one of these big yachts you have people how do not have a clue. It takes only one to absently leave a door open etc and that’s it.

We learned about 'leverage' as apprentices. Using a lever allows a person to lift heavy weights.
That mast acted like a couple of hundred feet long lever.
The Force from a Tornado hitting the top of the Mast would have tipped the Yacht over easily.

Allan, I have sailed on the Star Clipper. At the time is was the largest passenger sailing ship of its kind in the world. Not to alarm passengers, at a pre arranged time and with plenty of warning, the captain put the ship under full sail. The experience was both exhilarating and terrifying. Within a minute the Star Clipper healed over to an incredible angle and it was cling on or fall overboard. I repeat, I know nothing about yachts but alluminium masts of that height will surely buckle under such stress. The design may have allowed the mast to be lowered to form a keel but in relatively shallow water that may not have been possible. A conspiricy or coincidence. We will just have to wait and see. I notice no British MPs of either port or starboard persuasion were aboard.

Did the crew leave a porthole open type of thing?

It would be more like didn’t get to close one in the rush to make vessel watertight.

But a port hole open would not allow in enough water to get in that quick unless it was huge.

There is a gash in the side, is that caused by the falling mast?

Those that are lost probably in their Staterooms they could have been flung across the Stateroom and knocked out.

Most people were up and about, crew on watch, starting the breakfast prep. Other passengers on the rooms above water level with access to the outside.

All damage due to a waterspout. No idea the amount of water that contains but way and above the weight that the hull could withstand, the big saloon windows etc.

I doubt that any ship could withstand a waterspout without severe damage. If ship on the move it maybe could be avoided but anchored ?

In the end the design flawed, and so on through the builders and buyers.

It will be interesting to see the final reports in a few months time but will they be truthful?

There was a chap in our office in 1968-80 who said that he had been a Cape Horner when young. B1912 d 1981. His tails were good and inline with what I had read.

Reports were all the hatches were open and another yacht not so far away weathered the storm
