As usual I've added some locations to help younger folk understand what they are looking at, because the Heap is gone, & all that land is now covered with housing, streets & road.
We moved from Lyon St to 'C' the Winderemere Cres Estate in 1953 just a few years after the photo was taken.
The Slag Heap was created when molten slag from the Jarrow Palmers Blast Furnaces was taken away on special railway wagons and dumped on the Jarrow-Hebburn border over many many years.

Interesting photo Norman. A very different place in the 60's and 70's when I spent time around there!

Norman, the area Marked 'D' was that not where the Police houses were?

'D' I'm sure they are the houses at bottom of Clyde Avenue?

If you go up Campbell Park Rd and pass the Finchale Rd junction on the right and then pass Elmfield Club look right and you will see that row of Houses still there today.
They were once a terrace of houses surrounded by fields but are now surrounded by housing.

It's hard to imagine where Campbell Park Road will be on there...

This photo was taken just passed the Elmfield Club with the left turn ahead into Monkton Village. It also shows the white painted Elmfield Rd houses that were built for the men who sank Monkton Coal Shaft . Lukes Lane estate is straight ahead.

I know that view very well Norman, thanks! My Mam lived in a flat in that row of houses by the flyover 80's/90's.
My auntie Eva and family lived in Elmfield Terrace
