Been up to the allotment making sure everything is secure for the pending winds, whilst there lifted our Kerr's Pink potatoes, we got over 9kg of 8 seed potatoes a decent return, also brought home some onions we have had hanging after harvest, a half dozen courgettes, a good bunch of spring onions, about a kilo of tomatoes, a dozen chillies and 2 cucumbers. Corn is getting close to plucking, and pumpkins and aubergine are starting to grow well with a fair few fruit, they're still small but promising, winter beetroot starting to break through and second leeks bedding in well. Will plant the rest of the Christmas potatoes(Charlotte) over the weekend and the carrots next week with some long Chinese radish. A few different greens will be going in over the next week or two to extend our growing season.

From a potentially poor year we have done OK, one or two disasters mainly beans and peas but aubergine and chillies looking great so the doom and gloom of the Springtime has somewhat disappeared and hopeful of the Autumn veg to come.

I think we will probably miss the major of the storm, thank goodness.

We have started to eat apples from our trees, so far we have 3 varieties on the go, an Apple Strudel will be made at the weekend, then I think an apple and plum crumble might be made, our neighbour has been found with Victoria plums so will stew those with the cooking apples from our trees. I wish I could make use of redcurrants, our neighbour has loads, I have made redcurrant ice cream which was rather nice, maybe I will scour the cook books for something.

Brian, your harvest sounds interesting, happy eating.

Redcurrants make a good jam with rhubarb and raspberries, alternatively if you have a few different berries etc a summer pudding is always good.

Free fruit just tastes better.....

Just picked another load of blackberries for the freezer so the next 12 months of crumbles should be safe.
I will hopefully be bringing some cooking apples from Northumberland the week after next to be sugared and frozen......struggling to find them in the shops in our part of Derbyshire.
