EV cars. What do you think of them ignoring the E bit

I now see a lot of electric cars about. There are 4 belonging to neighbours within half a mile.

Tesla badley in need of a redesign of bodywork out of date.

See MG quite often and other make but the one make that impresses me is those in the Kia range like Sportage and Sorento and other smaller ones. No doubt the Hyundai one will be similar.

Of the other maker there are some beautiful ones but the cost WOW.

No I’m not getting one no brass!

As we live near Harrogate there are a lot of wealthy people about as a lot of business people that have companies in Leeds, Bradford area live around here.

I seem to remember that at one time Gosforth was a top place years ago then Ponteland became in vogue.

We thought about moving to Boldon in about 1965/66 but came South instead.

Allan, I have read that the sales of Plug-in EV cars has slowed down and people are just not buying them or going for the Hybrid models. Auto trader states that sales have fallen by 65% year on year

Did not want to get into the pros and cons of the electric cars just the styling of the bodywork.

A neighbour has just bought a new Nissan Quashqai. It’s a lovely car. Is that the car built in Washington.

Some of the EVs designs are a bit too radical for me. Kia and Hyundai are an example.
Some go down the more traditional route, like the Volvo e30 but blank out where the radiator grille would be, which to me looks like a cheap cop out and looks terrible covered with fly squash. Tesla also look unfinished.

The ePower range of Nissan's is an
interesting one. They are run on battery but are charged by an on board petrol motor.

Ray, that's a Hybrid model and becoming very popular with drivers. I drive a Toyota Hybrid.

Ray, I drive a Qashqai Automatic Hybrid I have had 6 new Qashqai's and this being the best of them never had a problem with any of them,a great car.

David, Its a i.5 Tpyota Yaris Excel. (2023 Automatic of course) Good little car.

John the guy at the top of our road has a white Toyota Hybrid, also a MG soft top Sports car. A classic car.

Malcolm,I have never had an MOT on a car I always change them before they get to three years old.
The good thing is that I am always driving a car with three years Manufacturers Warranty, however I have never had cause to use it. My present car which will be three years old in November will be in for a new model in October this year.

Just as well that you can afford to do that.

To me that would be throwing money down the drain if you use your own money.

However I suspect that you buy your cars on a contract that lasts for 3 years at so much per month, that I understand might do that myself in a few years.

To do that with the type of car that I need would be very very expensive. Probably £750 per month.

My Kia Sorento is now 12 years old and done 100,700 miles ignoring its normal services and tyres it’s cost me in repairs about £4000 and most of that due to replacement clutch. Which would be required anyway at those miles but My Sorento is a Tow car.

I have only bought 2 new cars 1968 and 1985.

My Sorento had 5 years still on its manufactures warranty when bought. I know from that they last a long time 250,000 miles as do some Toyota cars.

In the past usually changed cars before 59,000 miles don’t know why just did.

I have just had some work done on my car but will write about that later.

Alan,I have never bought a car on HP or Contract Lease I paid cash for all of the cars I have had over the years and will continue to do so as long as I can afford to do so

I have to ask Colliery Lad, I like Allan keep my cars for years, My last car (a Mercedes CClass, My fifth Mercedes over the years) I kept for 13 years and sold it last year. What are the costs in depreciation for changing every 3 years, must be quite high and at what milage? (Just iout of interest)

John,the average mileage on my cars after 3 years is approx 18-20k miles and the change over costs have been approx 8-10k of course like all cars you can get them cheaper if you go down the ranges the one I drive is the 2nd most expensive model.
For a lot of years Nissan have had a Friends and Family scheme and if you know someone who works there you get a 20% discount off new cars. I am still waiting to have it confirmed to me that Nissan are going to reduce it from September this year

Thank you Colliery Lad, Still a lot of money but, you have peace of mind year on year, at my age I have stopped doing my own repairs and even have breackdown cover.

All interesting concepts.

I still do my own servicing on the daily car, and a rolling refurbishment of my 43 year-old classic Porsche 924.

Just replaced lower wishbones, previously overhauled entire brakes/bearings fuel system etc

Now on exhaust + other parts, should be back rolling in a week or so...

But I still have breakdown cover, mad not to, just in case!!

I just love old cars, and tinkering with them!

I had a Vauxhall Vectra 3.0 Sri Estate, one hell of a motor.

However it was only front wheel drive and In snow useless and living out in the Dales you need 4 wheel drive in Winter ( or you used to!)

At the time the Kia Sorento was always the tow car of the year and you had 4 wheel drive if you needed it.

To date I have used the 4 wheel drive maybe 3 or 4 times in snow or ice.

Or course the 4 wheel drive comes in handy on campsites if wet. Used that maybe 6 times.

Changing Caravans required a high tow limit on the car now 100kg instead of 80kg.

That tow limit is or was difficult to get in a car just as it was to get an Automatic car that would tow a Caravan, Automatics were limited to 750 kg weight on the caravan but manual around twice that.

My Sorento does everything that I require of it, just not very economical as some more modern ones but not enough to justify a change.
