Does anyone know/remember what was built on this field before housing. I played on this field as a boy,it wasn't very flat with some quute deep depressions..

That was the Pyro football field. When at St Aloysius we sometimes used it.

As I remember it also had a few tanks, presumably gases or liquids used by Pyrotenax.

I also remember it had a small car park at the back of the houses on Hedgeley Road and an entrance to it from Hedgeley Road. I'm assuming that it was only for Pyrotenax workers.

It served as a Football pitch for all the Town for years and years and don't remember it being used for anythink else, It was as Peter says used as a car park before building a small estate.

I remember it very well as football pitch back in the 1950s as kids we would play on the small pitch next to the railway lines,where may have games when some of the bigger lads would join in and kick the ball over the railings on to the electrified lines,it was always retrieved.The CIU clubs played on Sunday morning l remember the BUFFs club having a good team,there was 2 brothers Called Rutherford,Ernie was a big goal scorer,they lived down the Quay l think on Paliment st,l believe a funfair was held on the pitch there.on a Sunday morning the club games got up to 100 crowd after the game they would go over the wooden bridge down to there club get changed and have cheese pickled .onions ,etc. Happy days

My prievious post l forgot to mention the BUFFs speciality after the match included with cheese and pickled onions was of course TRIPE. Horrible stuff,""

Tom, my father Alex Shearer Snr played for the Buff's Club on that field and remember him scoring 5 goals in one game. He was good.

I played òn the Pyro football pitch for Glen Street Boys Club. What a rough pitch!

Played football on it for the Quay Board school team in the 50's. Awful pitch, used to come off full of cuts and bruises.
