Chris Rigg.

I know that talking about football can be contentious but I am really surprised that little or no board discussion has taken place about Chris Rigg.
Chris is a 17 year old, born and bred in Hebburn who plays regular first team football for Sunderland. Not only that, he is Sunderland's youngest player, youngest goal scorer and a regular player and Captain for England Youth teams.
He is also recognised, by some of those who know, as having the potential of being one of the best of his generation.
In earlier years I remember with pride that George Armstrong was a "Hebburn Lad" I think that Chris deserves the same accolade.

Strange how Chris Rigg hasnt been mentioned before?
An old board regular was Malcolm Rigg, so they must be related?
Another Hebburn footballer from before Geordie Armstrong was Ray Wood born 1939 and a goal keeper for Man U. Then earlier again we had John Dixon a forward who became an Aston Villa legend 1945 to 1961.

Should a record of Hebburn footballers be being compiled for the future? Not me as I haven't enough knowledge but between all you chaps out there it would probably be possible.

There were loads of local footballers from Hebburn and Jarrow a few made it to be semi professional like my Dad who played for Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbourgh etc. Jarrow Imperials, teams in the NE league.

I have newspaper cuttings for around the 1920/30’s but not read them in depth as they are now a bit flimsy.

I should scan them before they deteriorate too much.

Each company would have a football team of sorts if big enough.

Leslie’s, Reyrolle’s and who else? Pyro?

Don’t forget the there were a lot of cricket teams as well.

Bowls teams plus others!

Colliery Lads Post reminded me the Dad played for Southport at one time.

I have a photo of him at a reunion there late 70’s early 80’s.

Looks like I’m going to have to dig through his newspaper cuttings and try to piece together him footballing career.

He gave up because of knee problems I think which runs in the family due to football Bad Tackles probably Grandfather Father and son.

I did not like football but did play. I disliked the roughness that some of the lads had, not skill just to take you out.

Running was my sport.

Alan C were you related to Bob Sibbald. He was related to our family a cousin of my mother. Am not sure but Goerdie Armstrong may have some family connection

I'm a Hebburn lad and Newcastle season ticket holder of over 40 years..but seeing young Chris develop into one of Sunderlands best prospects makes me very happy..he,s very highly regarded by everyone at safc and looks likely to to go on to big things..I say we'll done Chris..Hebburn lad an proud..

In the old days, local football supporters would go to Roker Park one week and Saint James Park the next, because they enjoyed football.

Robert Sibbald was a professional Footballer in same era as Geordie Armstrong. He played for Leeds then lower leagues .The for LA Aztec as there captain for several years playing against and alongside Pele, George Best and other world class names.

David, he played half a season in 1975 and 3 seasons 1977 to 1980 a total of 3.5 years not 7
During he playing career at Aztec he played a total of 138 games and 180 for Southport

Colliery lad , you seem to known Bob sibbold and you maybe right about the split but he had yrs involvement with LA Aztecs. He also was with Leeds United under Revie albeit as a reserve but he was a talented player.

David, yes your correct he did play for Leeds was there 1965 to 1969 but only played 2 games for the first team in all of that time

Colliery lad, that Leeds team were top class he was against Paul Madeley, Trevor cherry, jack Charlton, Norman hunter, et Al.
He was a class full back but was not getting in that squad. He was related to my mam used to come to our house.
There was article I've got a copy which both George Best and Pzele said he was one of finest full backs they played against.
