Fuel consumption

I filed the car with Diesel at near Holy Island with Shell Diesel and had good mileage from it and so filled up with Shell wherever I could find at a reasonable price. Cheapest at a Shell place on the North side of Leeds. Been going to Leeds quite a bit.
Some time ago I’m sure I read that the fuel consumption figure on my car, the average, was for the last 17 miles. That seems a daft figure. Now that could have been on my last Vectra sold in 2013.
What I do find is that my overall fuel consumption figures is affected by where the fuel Station is located and traffic after leaving the garage.
It’s a consumption killer if there are bits of hills or and if traffic holdup’s.
So I now stick to Shell at the moment, handy garage at Leeds.
Cannot be totally certain but the extra cost seems to pay for itself by better consumption. However that’s due to the Leeds fills as 10 to 15p cheaper than in Harrogate.
Not this year put in the top diesel but will, run tank well down and put in 20 to 30 ltrs or the top stuff to give a sort of clean out.
Please note that there are a lot of problems with Diesel cars these days, something to do with the Gas Recirculating Valves. Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover and others.
I’m told it’s the amount of short runs done, clogs things up. There’s more to it I know.
There is a similar thing with the exhaust systems on all diesel cars, short runs a killer.
My last Vectra used to do a fuel burn to clean out the system, it would heat up,the exhaust system to 600 to 900 degrees and you could tell by the heat that came off it.
Don’t know what my Sorento does though.
The lady that ripens our caravan storage has a Landrover some years old and it’s been off the road since early May as failed its MOT. It’s been fixed and retested and failed three times and now they cannot get the parts to fix it. Stuff on back order!
I suspect that it’s the Gas recirculating Valve again as all dealers appear to have the same problem. In her case she has had to buy another car.
Enough from me.

Try as I may, the amount of roadworks makes it almost impossible to keep the fuel consumption at a reasonable level.
There are 4 between Harrogate and home and whichever way you go “ roadworks. There are various rat runs that I can use but heavier on fuel.
Another 2 trips to Leeds this week. Hopefully that’s it for a while but enjoyed the journeys as needed to get used to heavier traffic on unfamiliar ish roads.
