Virgin.net e maill address
Posted by Allan Campbell on 9/10/2024, 17:03:45
I have one that I have used for maybe 44 years and I have received e mails saying it’s to be closed in 30 days.
The e Mail seems genuine BUT it could be a scam.
I understand that this was sold to EE some years ago.
I will be pulling the old e mails that I want to another e Mail maybe Google.
I have looked to see a way of transferring over to Virgin Media but cannot find how to do so. Loads of useless info but of no use.
I have a virginmedia.com email address, and looked for a replacement provider as I, along with many other people, was completely locked out of my mail account for over 3 months last year, losing access to all my folders and archived mail. Many people were struggling with travel arrangements etc. with everything stored in their mail account. The service was eventually restored, but there was no compensation, and very little by way of apology. My trust was severely eroded. As soon as I could I set up a secure (paid for) email account with a specialist email provider and transferred everything, including the whole folder structure of my email account over to them. The only thing that hits my virgin media account now is spam.
It seems that email is a dying service on Virgin. Since 2022 no new virgin accounts can get a virginmedia.com email address, and existing accounts could not add new emails from that date. I think that with the growth of email availability from the likes of Google and Microsoft etc., that are not tied to specific ISP's email as a service from internet service providers is becoming extinct. To be fair, there is a lot to be said for not having your email account tied to your ISP. It makes changing internet providers easier having your email independant.
There are many services out there, both paid and free, and it pays to do your research. Gmail is probably the most popular, but I for one think Google knows way too much about all of us already without pumping all my email through their servers! Also you tend to get the service and support you pay for.
For me, I was looking for a secure independant email service at a reasonoble cost and looked at a number of alternatives. I settled with posteo, a German company at the huge cost of 1€ a month. They have a transfer service which transferred my whole virginmail account over, including all archived emails and the folder structure, pretty seamlessly. Been using them for over a year now and have no complaints. I can access my mail from my phone, ipad, and windows computer easily and conveniently.

I use two email accounts. BT which is my ISP and Gmail. Messages which come to the latter are all automatically diverted to by BT Mail inbox and the original is deleted by Gmail. But I only send messages or replies from BT.
This is a copy from my settings "Forwarding:
Disable forwarding Forward a copy of incoming mail to xxxxxxxxxxxx@etc (in use) and delete Gmail's copy"
All that means they are sorted and tidy. I am sure that other providers will have similar arrangements. Hoping this helps.
Mac ,you should'nt really put your email address on a open forum as it can be open to abuse.ie folk sending spam and such like. I allways asterix some of the address for demonstration purposes.
Thanks. I didn't realise I had done it . I guess because I copied and pasted it to help Allan. Doh!! I am so careful about my personal information and having been around the cutting edge of computers since 1962 and the internet since its inception I should have spotted what I was doing. Just show that the savvy can make mistakes. So thanks to you I have amended my post.
