Newcastle Quayside & 4 bridges

The Tyne Bridge opened 1928 so it isnt very old on this photo. The Swing Bridge behind, opened 1876. Behind that is the High Level Bridge that opened in 1849 so it is our oldest bridge. The 'King Edward 7th' Railway Bridge can just be seen & that one opened in 1906. (all years thanks to Google)
Nice photo Norman. An interesting feature is St. Mary's church in Gateshead. It overlooks the Guildhall in Newcastle, built by Robert Trollop. When he died, Newcastle refused to bury him with his name being Trollop. ( In those days, a trollop was a loose woman.). So they sent him packing to be buried at St. Mary's in Gateshead. However, someone scribbled on his gravestone, " here lies Robert Trollop who made yon stones roll up. When death took his soul up, his body filled this hole up". Strange but true!
Strange animal is the High Level Bridge! The supporting pillars are actually hollow below the river level and solid above. The original road was wood with a toll booth on the Gateshead side.
