Jarrow and its slake

This photo showing Jarrow and the slake dates from 1919. The floating dock on the slake is the Medway Dock (AFD4) built by Swans at Wallsend in 1912. The dock was positioned at Jarrow from 1914 to repair naval vessel during WWI. To the right of the dock is the Floating isolation hospital built by Wood, Skinner at Bill Quay in 1886.

Thanks Peter, great picture, Tell me, was the slake a natural waterway or something that was built for the Colliers to berth or turn.

Natural, John. They used it to season wood in timber ponds.

When we talk about seasoning wood on the slake, are we talking about Pyman Bell or Denny Mott and Dickinson ?

I worked at pyman bell and that was right on the slake.
