Argyle St 2002

I took this photo in 2002 and it shows the Community Centre on the right. It was a modern building as you can see, but demolished not many years later when Hebburn Central (The Hub) was built.

I would never have recognised it Norman. My memory is of Argyle Street is the Clinic and Lismore House etc. it seems a shame that the community Centre was demolished. It looks quite a new building. It’s nice seeing shrubs and trees.

I always think that it was a disgrace that this Community Centre was demolished when it was only opened in 1982 and lasted a little more than 30 years. It had far superior facilities to the Hebburn Hub in my opinion, with the sports hall with seats, the upstairs indoor bowling green and bar, and the squash courts among other things.

It was never used as much as they thought it would be barring the indoor bowls. It was more a sports centre than a community centre, and I think that contributed to the lack of footfall. not everyone is sports inclined.

There were other clubs that ran in it as well as sports activities, such as a Sci-Fi club and youth clubs, things like tea dances for older folk and evening functions. I don't know how well it was getting used towards the end of its days. I still think it was a shocking decision by our awful Council to close this and demolish it, along with all the other more recent buildings that have by the wayside such as the Father Walsh Centre on Hedgeley Road and Queens Road Day Centre in Jarrow. As Joseph mentioned, it was closed probably to sell the land off for more unaffordable houses to most.

Another example of, it's only Hebburn they'll not mind,had it been Shields it probably would still be there,same as the old baths, far superior to the new ones but the land was wanted for more housing.

I remember the Post Office using Hedley Hall as a sorting office to sort the Christmas post during the late 50's and early 60's. I was a temporary Postie during the school Christmas Holidays when I was in the 6th. form at Jarrow Grammar school. - Happy Days

Do you happen to have a Panoramic photo taken at the Grammar School?
I have a 1957 one, borrowed from Llyn Green but one or two pupils faces are damaged.
If you havent one I can email you the 5 seperate slices.
