The way we were before holidays abroad

This is what we called 'The little beach' but it doesnt look that little does it

I remember my pal Colin in Oz who emigrated to Oz in the late 70s seeing the famous Bondi Beach and it disappointed him after being used to seeing our beaches.

That photo is a cracker. The beach looks huge and took me a second before I twigged which beach it was.

Only vague memories of using one of those tents.

Do remember that about 6-10 of us from the Crawley Ave. area going to that beach. Very few about that day other than us so it must have been during the week and school hols so before 1957.

Nice photo, looks,s a little congested but better that than empty. Some beaches are nothing like this one,have to use shoes, small pebbles or gravel hard on the feet not sand.Is this beach man made or natural?

That beach was called Herd Sand on a 1913 map and it was big, Nearly as wide as it was long at low tide if the map maker is correct.

I cannot read the name of the South Beach printing too small and map does not cover very much of it.

I remember a lot of sand and then very little I assume because of weather, winter storms.

Yes Natural sand along most of the North sea coast and it gets better into Northumberland with the best beaches in the UK.

Like many families we had "our" spot on the Herd Sands beach. You could always find some member of the clan there at weekend. Tent erected, sand table prepared and cloth on!
Around us would be familiar faces all with their "own" spot and rarely if ever a territorial dispute.
How social interaction should be! Today mostly gone downhill!

since holidays abroad started.
I hope it doesnt make all our ex pats homesick because this country is full up with illegal migrants now.
We cant even deport criminal invaders
