Water companies, time to stop the gravy train

When Margaret Thatcher announced water privatisation there was zero debt, the combined debt of the water companies in now,£60 billion and rising. Thames carry the most debt amongst the companies, Ofwat are toothless if not complicit in this, one major investor in Thames water were McQuarrie who were actually taking more in dividends than the company were making in profits. Parliament sat on their hands doing nothing.

The companies continuously try passing the buck and insist the only way to make the system better is higher bills whilst the service had never been worse with water not being fit to drink in some places, sewage spills on the up yet again. If an industrial company pollute the waterway they end up in court, water companies seem to be immune from prosecution, yes they've been fined but we ultimately pick up the cost via our bills. Get the shareholders and CEOs in court, charge them as well as the companies it may have the desired affect.

I couldn’t agree with you more Brian. We are one of their customers and I’ve been buying water from the Supermarket to drink for years. Water should never have been privatised. Of course in years past there was never the extra millions of people using water. I read that the water companies have more accurate numbers of people in the country than any government. It can tell by the sewage they have to deal will, not a nice thought, but true.

Sheila it's a scandal you should have to do that, Thames is borrowing £3billion to get it through 2025, personally I would love to see the government cajole these companies into bankruptcy and bit by bit take them back under control no matter how long and whose in power. I wonder if it would happen because the present situation isn't working and isn't viable long term.

All you have to say Brian is very true, Sheila I can sympathise with you as when we lived in both Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire our water supplier was Thames, an absolutely awful company and like you we bought water from the supermarket for drinking purposes. Where we now live comes under Welsh Water, we find the quality is excellent, perfectly drinkable which has saved us a fortune as we no longer need to buy bottled water.

Water costs do vary, having a meter is the best thing for us, when we lived in Hertfordshire we didn’t have any say in the matter we had to take part in water meter trials as a consequence we were one of the first people to have a water metered installed, what a difference it made to our bills, also made us very aware not to waste water, I certainly think that water meters should be installed in all properties.. It amazes us how low our water charges are by comparison to friends who come under Northumbria Water.

We have a plumbed in water filter for our drinking water & it saves having to buy bottled water every week.
I worked as a Service Engineer for Sigmund Pulsometer Pumps many years ago & often went to the Sewerage Works where sewerage was treated for the City of Durham & local area.Their Engineer told me that once it is treated it is discharged into the river and is clean & drinkable. All plastics & rubbish were filtered out and human waste after treatment was laid on drying beds (Fields) & it became compost for the Farmers. My Boss at Sigmunds asked me to get some bags of this Compost for his garden so I did & some for my parents garden.
Soon after , I remember seeing loads of little green tomato plants sprouting in dads garden. The reason being tomato seeds safely pass through us and dont die. How many seeds is in 1 tomato? hundreds & hundreds

Norman, when we moved into a new build, the couple next door ordered a load of top soil for their back garden. When the came home a week later the whole back garden was green with tomato plants. I can still picture it.
