Enjoy the view of the High Level Bridge that opened 175 years ago. How brilliant our North east engineers were. Thats St Nicholas's Cathedral spires behind the Castle 'Keep' pre ww1.

What a photo, Brilliant. Just look at the train but better is the buildings on the quayside.

Very old buildings I’ve not seen the like before.

Amazing photo Norman. I notice a guard against damage on a support beam, water level, If they had them in the USA when a ship demolished a bridge, with loss of life, perhaps the damage would have been minimized

What is the dome on the skyline? Next to the keep and cathedral.

I’ve tried following the line of it and at a guess it’s near the football ground Leazes way.

It may have been a church now gone but the dome doesn’t fit with a church.

It may be the dome that was on top of the YMCA building demolished on the Blackett St. Grainger St. corner.

Shape the same but the spike reduced in height.

That’s my best guess after looking at some old Newcastle photos.

I tried following the line and thought it was before it hit Newgate Street cooperative. There's so many buildings gone since the photo was taken that the skyline from then to now are as different as chalk and cheese. It why I thought of the Empire Theatre, the alternative was opposite the Co-op but I have little recollection on what was there or further along onto Percy Street where Barclays and the meteorological building was erected in the 1960s and the Eldon Square shopping centre was erected in the 1970s. Can you remember what was there?

Along Percy St remember Barclays bank straight across road same side Emerson chambers which closed and become Redford Hairy salon then St Andrews church then Coop then a pub.My memories could be wrong .

Maria, the area I am thinking of is mainly opposite the Co-op and St Andrews as those building plus where the Barclays is/was as it is closed now are all new build since the photo was taken. I cannot recall the previous buildings.

I belive the fish market was in that area too, it's the buildings and the skyline to see if there was any domes on top of buildings

The only domes I can recall are the ymca, essoldo and the central arcade. The arcade has 3.

Empire palace theatre I presume then the Empire cinema had a dome in centre of roof .32 power candle lamps article by Arthur Lloyd interesting .

The theatre and cinema were adjoining buildings, I thought it was reasonable to assume the Empire could have had a dome, the buildings were of a decent height and the angle of the photo would have meant it would have been hard to see much past Grainger Street but you would have see up Newgate Street because of the Bigg Market/Grainger Street/Newgate Street crossroad.
