The castle keep was built for Henry II in 1172 but he never visited it. Over the years it has been a rooftop garden, a gaol and a prison. The Black Gate was built in 1247. It once housed 67 families so history says...both worth a visit!

Have a look at Alex Isles series on YouTube, some very interesting videos about the castle keep and how the keep site had been significant for centuries before the Keep was built.

The Doric building is long gone. There's a covered area that is a detached of the Empress pub in that footprint.
