US Election thoughts

Here in the US it’s Election Day and all the reports are saying that it is going to be a neck and neck contest between the two candidates for President.

It absolutely floors me that half of the country seems to think that an authoritarian government would be better for them. That they are willing to vote for a man who has shown open disregard for the country’s constitution, who refuses to accept election results unless he wins, who instigated the January 6 coup attempt in 2021, who has said he will use military force against the American people, has spoken openly of punishing his political enemies if elected, and on and on.

It worries me what kind of country we might become because where America goes, the rest of the world tends to follow. We have already seen the rise of extreme right wing politics around the world. Mark Twain said that history doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes, and I worry that less than 100 years after world war 2 we are starting to see it rhyme again.

Sorry Norman if this is too political; please remove if it is. Just where my thoughts are today as people go to the polls.

As you are a resident in the US, you probably have a clearer view of what's happening over there.

I have to agree with your comments, obviously referring to Trump (I won't give him a title, as the one that springs to mind would get me banned from here, and probably arrested!)

But it speaks volumes that the shop owners/residents of Washington are boarding up their premesis, and thousands more police & military are being drafted in... they know what's coming!

And the Republicans are already contesting votes from abroad... A US citizen, resident in the UK was on TV today, having been told she can't vote, although she has done so for years!

Sounds like desperation, or dirty tricks...

We have American regulars that read or take part on this board & they have different views AJG

Brits shouldn't get involved with American politics because we are no experts. Look at the Government we've ended up with.

Norman, well said. I was thinking of a reply but thought better of it as it’s none of our business. That is why I was surprised to read about some Labour advisors were taking time off to canvas for the Democrat vote. At the moment I would say to AJG, unfortunately we now have our own problems, with our new Labour government.

Well said Norman, like Sheila I feel American politics are best left for discussion by Americans, I have often got myself involved in very ‘in depth’ discussions with my fellow Brits who have different views in American politics than I have, as Sheila points out we have too many problems of our own with the present Government, but it will be extremely interesting if a certain Mr T gets voted in, don’t think that Starmer and Lammy will be one of the first to be invited to America to say hello!!!

Still don’t know why we, in the UK, give over so much time to American politics I am sure they didn’t worry about our own Electiin we recently had.

Malcolm, I’m not very happy about how honest our postal votes are. As I said when Labour won the election, it will be very hard to remove them. They will destroy most of what we know as the Uk. Look at the people who were rioting, needed to be punished but given a harsher sentence than more serious crimes. Now we find the alleged killer of the children in Southport was indeed a follower of terrorists.

The Electoral Commission used to administer the postal vote but was put out to tender a good few years back. I know there was a stink a few years back when Boris got in about Laura Keusenberg appearing to know the overall postal voting results before the polls had closed. It is open to abuse but the postal service struggled with it and stories of missing voting cards, delays etc

Well said Norman, I have relatives living in Massachusetts and New Hampshire who were hoping for a Trump win as Biden and Harris have been a disaster for the US.

CM, the reason that we and Europe are interested in American politics is because it the most powerful country in the Free World. We need them as friends , as we needed them in WW2. We couldn’t have won WW2 without them. I know it’s been very unpopular to support them for many years, especially from the political left wing thinking but true. At the moment they supply most of the cash for NATO, but that might change with Trump , as last time he was not happy how much Europe were paying towards NATO defence.

At least Trump does stand up against immigration not like our politicians current and previous, it’s about time we took a very firm stand against the economic migrants who keep sailing over from France uninvited, then once here get treated as if we owe them something.
